Favored soul , balanced?

One of my players wanted to play a favored soul. After looking the class over I said sure, but was wondering what enworld's collective wisdom is on the subject. Are favored soul's a balanced/overpowered/underpowered class? Is there anything I should watch out for? Thanks

Depends what you compare the FS to. Its not more unbalanced/powerful than the holy trinity for example.

I would rate it a bit below the sorcerer.

So, for a caster its fine, compared to a melee, it will still vastly outgun them at higher level.

A bit weak, IMO. When compared to that which it is supposed to subsume/replace in the party: the cleric.

Not that that is a bad thing, mind you...

I guess I just value the ability to relatively easily handle undead more than some.

A bit weaker than Cleric, but good enough that it will not noticeably fall behind other classes.

I would change knowledge (arcane) to knowledge (religion), and I would remove the wings and replace it with another ability, but other than that I think it's fine.

Wierd wings power at higher level that does not feel appropriate for all faiths, but generally a fine spontaneous divine casting class. I remember a little bit of wonkiness on the class skills list but can't remember off the top of my head what they get and don't get.

Compared to the strong cleric: No Turn Undead (and thus no access to Divine Feats) and no domains including kewl domainz powerz. Better saves and some feats. That leaves them a bit weaker.

Edit: No spontaneous curing... he has to pick all these spells according to his restricted spells known... that's bad.

If it's your only healer, don't discount "no ability to memorize the obscure spell which fixes the particular condition the last monster just gave you." Nevertheless, a good class.

^ Yeah, what they all said. Balanced, but some of the abilities are wonky for a base class. Not bad, just wonky.

Lack of situational spells = invest in some Scrolls & Wands. If those are easily available, this is a fine class.

Well, the lack of Knowledge (religion) as a class skill really should have been erraticized at some point, if for no other reason than how badly that winds up hamstringing the FS's prestige class options.

The wings are dumb, the divine weapon feats really don't make sense for gods who aren't melee types, and the energy resistances are kind of pointless.

I'd say the bottom line here is that the class is geared towards divine casters that plan to do a lot of self-buffing.
