Insightful Strike

Does the Swashbuckler's Insightful Strike ability allow for increased damage with, say, a throwing axe? I'm having some trouble understanding what is meant by a 'Finesse' Weapon.

Thanks!

A finesse weapon is one that you can use your Dex bonus to melee attack rolls with if you have the Weapon Finesse feat. So, in the PHB list, light weapons, rapiers, and spiked chains.

I agree. The important terms here are "Dex bonus" and "melee." Since a thrown weapon is not a melee attack, it is not eligible. So, for example, a spear would never be eligible, as it can be used with a Dex bonus to hit, OR in melee, but not both at the same time.

Also, the whip should be included in the list above. If Dervish levels are taken, the scimitar will also work.

Is it the flavour or the definition that you're having trouble with here? I can think of a couple of supporting characters in novels who use throwing axes and could arguably be swashbucklers if it's the former.
