Which monsters do you think will be in MM1?

I think we'll still see the standard bunch of humanoids, such as Goblins, Hobgoblins, Orcs, Gnolls, Bugbears, Kobolds, Gnomes and Ogres.

But beyond that and any of the expected monsters that have been in ever MM1 since 1e, what do you think will appear?

I get the impression there will be Death Giants, Fomorians, Shadar-Kai, Dark Creepers and Dark Stalkers, based on some things mentioned in previews.

I think there might be Ethergaunts and Kaorti showing up, since they were new 3.5e monsters that did have some traction.

As few as they can get away with? After all if they string the iconic monsters that have always been in MM1 through the first say 3 MMs of 4e that's a much higher profit as people buy multiple books to get what they previously did in one. Not that I'm certain this is what they'll do but I have a hunch we'll see at least some measure of it. At the very least any of the monsters that were traditionally psionic will wait for MM2 to coincide with PHB2 where the psionic rules will appear.

Stuff with the name "Archon", Azers and Hellhounds.

There were a bunch in the Monster podcast that were used to do the quiz; Death Knight, Owlbear, Werewolf, Ghost... Dryads (we've heard of those a lot).

Zombies. Dragons. Demons/Devils.

Or did you mean something specific? :)

To not create a tangent... :)

I hope so.

Not to offend those who don't like psionics in their campaigns, but I just think Mind Flayers/Aboleths should be done to coincide.

On the other hand, monsters won't just have "Spell-like Ability (See PHB page x)", so they potentially Could do them, simply by giving them specific, psionic-like abilities. However, it would just be better, to me, if those powers 'synced up' with the Psionics system that is implemented.[/sblock]

I expect we won't see Illithids, till MM2 as well. Probably won't see Aboleths till MM2. But I've seen mentions of Yuan-Ti and Githzerai in playtests, so they might be in MM1. But then again they could have those sitting around, ready to go right away for when they come out with the psionics rules.

I don't have any special insight into the MMI monster set. But, I suspect that the monsters will frequently have mulitple entries/stat blocks for different roles. We know, for instance, that there are Hobgoblin Soldiers and Archers. And we've seen the rather short Spined Devil stat block. Together, those imply to me that they can fit more stat blocks in--as long as they don't have to fit in more flavor text. But making multi-role monsters doesn't require separate flavor text, just separate stats and powers.

This will also (partly) answer the criticism that the new pared-down 1-role monsters aren't flexible enough; you'd use different stat blocks of the same creature type. For instance, an enemy Warlock might summon a Bearded Devil [Soldier] as a major minion, whereas an unleashed devil that's actually the BBEG would be a Bearded Devil [Leader] entry.

Elite Bulette and Solo Beholder.... and also Gnomes
I am not sure, but won't the terms "Elite", "Minion" and "Solo" not be attached to the monsters roles instead of their name?

Like: Bullete (Elite Brute, Level 10, 2000 XP) or Beholder (Solo Artillery, Level 10, 4000 XP). (Note: role names, level and xp have been chosen arbitrarily and might not be even close to what the real names are.)

My guesses:
Gnome, Goblins, Hobgoblins, Bugbears, Orcs, Kobolds, several giants, ogres, troll, and (true) dragons will be in.

I am hoping for many different intelligent humanoids, and the occasional aberration style monster.

I am also hoping for more then a few different kinds of creatures that can either hide, meld-into or shapeshift enough to live and interact within large-cities. So various werecreatures, changelings, spirit-creatures (possessing people), and other weirder things with their own ways of blending in.

I expect there will be a good amount of your basic beast-monsters, and basic humanoids as well as those "play out of the book" dragons.
