D&D 4E Whither the d12 in 4e?

Kaffis

First Post
So, we all know that the poor, beleaguered d12 was largely ignored and shunned in 3.x.

Will 4th Edition continue this neglect, or will it make room and find a place for the d12 to shine and proudly roll across our gaming tables once more, rather than be quietly stuffed back into the dice bag at the beginning of every session when we pour forth the tools of our gaming?

And if you think the d12 may make a triumphant return, where's your money on it appearing?

The d12 has always been the least-used die. In 3.5 (core), it was used for barbarian hit dice, (medium) greataxe damage and...anything else?

In 1E (core), it was used for longsword and awl pike damage against Large opponents and...anything else?

It's always been barely used. I doubt 4E will change that.

I'd love to see the "d4" version of the d12 become a regular part of the game. You'd have three faces each marked 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. Keep the 1 through 12 die active as well (for the few things it's always been used for, maybe more), but eliminate the "four triangles" version of the d4 and manufacture a die that's easier to roll and more fair/random.

Sorry for the tangent, I just enjoy rolling the d12 - it has a pleasing shape and how many of us have watched players fling their d4's across the room awkwardly trying to "roll" them?

Barbarian (UA) HD. Couple of the random tables in the back of the DMG (specifically one or more of them for generating NPC party encounters..maybe the magic items they carry or something).

Giant crayfish had a damage attack that used it, so did the crocodile, triceratops, one of the hydras I think (15 headed or something), mummy, spotted lion, giant slug, unicorn. (probably some more monsters in MM2 and FF that used it as well)

Yeah, this is part of the impetus for this post, I suppose. I love my dodecahedrons, and wish I could roll them more.

Two words: Reciprocal Gyre (aka Kill the Cleric). For those unfamiliar, it's a spell that causes damage to a target based on the number of spells present on it. Basically, if you've got mega buffs going..owie. It started as 1d6 per spell level in CA but was changed to 1d12 per spell in SpC.

There you go.

Now, will 4E be more inclusive of the humble d12? I'm assuming it'll still be used for big weapons and the odd spell.

It's odd that the d12 gets so little play, it can simulate most of the smaller dice type, and it's one of the nicest looking dice.
