[OT] Halloween music

Clear Dragon

First Post
With Halloween rapidly approaching I am looking for some music suggestions. Not the corny stuff, rather music you are scared to listen to with the lights off. Any genre will do. Personally Black Sabbath's song Black Sabbath is a good example of what i mean. Driving through wooded area on a rainy, dark night with it playing in the car is quite creepy.

The only song I've been afraid to listen to in the dark is Tori Amos covering '97 Bonnie and Clyde by Eminem. Made the mistake of leaving the CD player on while I was asleep once, woke up at midnight to hear some ethereal elfin voice whisper about hammering her wife in the head. Creeeeepy.

Stuff that is close:

Most early atmospheric Bad Seeds and Birthday party stuff by nick cave has some good moments for darkness.

Depending on mood, Bauhaus and some of Peter Murphy's solo stuff. This is really, really hit and miss though.

Good subtle creepy music:

Jacob's Ladder soundtrack(really eerie)
Ninth Gate soundtrack
Silence of the Lambs soundtrack
The Cell soundtrack
The Others soundtrack

Over-the-top Halloweeny type music:

Bram Stoker's Dracula soundtrack
Anything by Midnight Syndicate

I use the soundtrack to John Carpenter's The Thing for my Cthulhu games - I find it creates the mood nicely.

And Tales of Mystery and Imagination, by the Alan Parsons Project. I know, sounds bad, but it's an album of songs inspired by Edgar Allen Poe and has some fantastic, moody stuff on it.

Tori's '97 Bonnie and Clyde is an Eminem cover? I had no idea! It's a damned creepy song.

If you're willing to go for lyrics, The Cure's Lullaby gives me the shivers:

And I feel like I'm being eaten by a hundred thousand shivering furry holes,
And I know that I will wake up in the morning in the shivering cold,
And the spider man is always hungry....

Scary stuff.

Otherwise, City of Lost Children's soundtrack is fantastic -- especially if you've seen the movie.

Kronos Quartet albums often have deeply unsettling tracks on them. Black Angels has two: the title piece, which is discordant and awful and perfect for attacks by giant insects (one movement is called Night of the Electric Insects); and the final piece, Shostakovich's Quartet #8, a dirge for the victims of Stalin's purges, are both great.

I'm always on the lookout for spooky music for my games when I want to really emphasize that dark fantasy/horror genre a little bit. I have no interest in "pop" music of any kind, though -- orchestral movie soundtracks are what works for my gaming group.

Currently what I have that I'd consider "creepy" are Signs, Brak Stoker's Dracula and a few tracks I took off the End of Days soundtrack. Looks like there might be a few good suggestions buried in here -- The Others? Silence of the Lambs? What do you say?

Industrial Monk - they intertwine Gregorian Chant with industrial beats. Rap done in Latin is spooky.

Rasputina - All-girl all-cello rock group. Again, some very creepy stuff. They've toured with Marilyn Manson a few times and their biggest single, "Transylvanian Concubine" was re-mixed by Manson and Twiggy Ramirez.

The Sisters of Mercy - Goth icons they may be, but lots of good, creepy-sounding stuff.

Cradle of Filth - English black metal. Great sweeping eerie keyboards. The vocals are an acquired taste, though.
