The huge creature known as the tobi-tatsu ("dragon bird"), also known as a hai-riyo, cruises the skies in silence, its eyes constantly searching the ground for its prey. Tobi-tatsu appear as huge birds, dwarfing even the mighty roc (of which they are believed to be relatives). Rather than a typical bird’s feathers, the creature is covered in long coppery plumes. Its head is replaced with that of an Oriental dragon.
Tobi-tatsu can speak Auran. They speak Common, though they prefer to communicate telepathically with lesser beings. Tobi-tatsu have a long-standing rivalry with kitsune or fox maidens, who often steal the eggs of the dragon birds.
Breath Weapon (Ex): Three times per day, a tobi-tatsu may breathe a cone of scalding steam (10d10 damage, DC 29).
Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, the tobi-tatsu must hit a Large or smaller creature with both claw attacks. If it succeeds, it may swallow whole.
Swallow Whole (Ex): A tobi-tatsu can attempt to swallow a grabbed opponent by making a successful grapple check. If it succeeds, the victim takes 1d6+6 points of acid damage per round from digestive acids.
Immunities: A tobi-tatsu is immune to sleep and paralysis, as are all dragons. In addition, it is immune to any sort of air-based attack.
Skills: The tobi-tatsu gains a +4 bonus to Hide and Move Silently checks.
The tobi-tatsu (hai-riyo) originally appeared in Dragon #248.
