Wryback

Grishnak

First Post
I used this creature from a 2e monster book but cannot remember which 1 now. It was only something like a 3hd creature but caused a party of 4, 5th level characters no end of trouble. I would like to get hold of the stats and update it to 3e or if someone has done it already done it would be kind enough to send it along to me.

Well I've finally found the Wryback and it's been updated and I must say that it's been done over good n proper with the +5 pencil of monster slaying. Here it is if you're interested in the creature. I know a lot of people will say this is a cool CR 1 creature but I'm going back to 2e where it was a very hard 5hd creature with abilities such as the pc's requiring to roll under 50% to see it per attack and the fact that it had blur at will and the effects of a spider climb on it permanently if I recall correctly.

The wrybacks have twisted rubbery black skinned bodies with vaguely ape like limbs that are rubbery as well. They sometimes have a blue or green tint to their skin. They stand a full 3 feet tall and about 50 pounds in weight. Their squat heads are wide with two bulging cat-like eyes.
Although Wryback's can manipulate objects with all four appendages, the feet usually are used for delicate tasks. Thick, rough pads on the feet and palms of the hands allow them to move almost silently and climb sheer surfaces of stone (unless completely smooth) and of wood or any other surface soft enough for the creatures to sink their claws into. Wryback's have been seen walking on two legs, running on all fours, and even swinging from rafters.

Combat
Wryback's fight with their claws, but they prefer stealth and bikebiting to direct attack.

Improved low-light vision (Ex): A wryback's vision is quintuple that of humans in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. They retain the ability to distinguish colour and detail under these conditions. Their eyes glow an eerie blue in dim light.

Bonesless (Ex): Wryback's have no true bones, only thin rods of gristle surrounded by layers of smooth, tough muscle - this gives them their twisted appearance. This construction gives them the following bonuses:
Resistant to falling damage: Subtract 30 feet from the actual distance fallen when calculating damage.
Blunt damage reduction: Though they feel pain when struck by a bludgeoning weopon, their bodies tend to compress under the blow giving them 10/- damage reduction to bludgeoning attacks.

Feign Death (Ex): Wryback's have one adaptation to space - the ability to feign death at will and automatically do so when exposed to deadly air or poison gas. This cataleptic state that is impossible to distinguish from death. The Wryback is able to smell, hear, and know what is going on, but is blind and has no sense of touch or pain. The Wryback does not need to eat, drink, or breathe when feigning death.
While in feign death, the Wryback is immune to subdual damage, and any normal or ability damage inflicted is reduced by half. In addition, the Wryback is immune to mind effecting attacks, paralysis, poison, disease, and energy drain. The effect of any poison or disease already affecting the Wryback when it enters into the catapletic state are halted until the feign death ends. If the Wryback has any negative levels when the spell takes effect, the saving throw to remove it is delayed until the spell ends.
The Wryback can end this effect at any time. While under feigning death it can sense breathable air.

Skills: Wryback's use their dexterity modifier for climb checks and receive a +8 racial bonus to ballance checks. They also receive a +4 racial bonus to hide, listen, move silently and spot checks.

Wrback's Characters
A Wryback's favoured class is rogue. Wryback's receive the following racial traits: -4 str, +4 dex, +2 con, -4 int, +2 wis, -2chr
