Spy music

First Post
I'm looking for some music to be used in a friend of mine's espionage game, and I was wondering if any of you have suggestions or ideas. I'm thinking of just getting some tracks off The Matrix soundtrack and tossing in more ambient techno, but I'm not sure. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks in advance!
Cheers!

When I run James Bond games I have a very deep selection of classic spy music. I have a two disc set of James Bond music. The second disc is very good because it doesn't have too much in the way of noticable James Bond themes (I believe a large section is a suite from Thunderball).

I have a set of 3 CDs with music from the Prisoner, the Avengers and the Saint. The Prisoner is a big mish-mash of things, but by being selective, it works well. I also have a few "classic TV theme" albums to throw in when I want to tip of the style of adventure for the players to expect. If it's a very deep con artist type job I'd start with the Mission Impossible theme. If it's a more down to earth one, I'd throw on the I Spy theme. If it's a little offbeat, I'd throw on the Avengers theme.

I used to occasionally play in a long lasting Champions game. Every session they would start with the Peter Gunn theme with one of the players giving a voice-over in classic 60's style of their hero team. It really helped set the mood.

Of course, if you game is more modern, you might want to avoid some of the 60's spy shows and stick to more general themes. However, you really can't go wrong with James Bond music. You'd be suprised how much there is without the two classic themes creeping in.

A few things come to mind...

There is a soundtrack for ALIAS, the TV show but I'm not sure exactly what tracks are on the CD.

There is a CD titled 'Dreamworld' which has music 'inspired' by The Matrix and is a collection of a variety of musical styles (industrial, techno, etc.).

Others may depend on the 'tone' or 'feel' of the game...something like the Underworld soundtrack may fit if the game is 'dark'.

I'm not an anime fan but some of the music from those type movies/series may be appropriate as well?

HTH,

I'm going to hate myself for this.

Mission: Impossible soundtrack. Yes, the Tom Cruise movie version. I was lucky to pick up the maxi-CD single (equivalent of those 12-inch vinyl singles for you DJ mixers) with several remixes of the well-known theme.

If you're thinking of the lobby fight-scene music from the Matrix, that was "Spybreak" by the Proppellerheads. It's on their "Decks, Drums, and Rock n Roll" CD which also happens to have a Bond-theme remix called "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". The CD is quite good.

The anime show "Cowboy Bebop" has a lot of techno and jazz, and some of it definately has a sixties spy-show kind of sound. You'll have to dig around a little to find the soundtracks, but I've seen them on ebay before. The show is on cartoon network every night in case you're not sure what I'm talking about.
