Howdy folks,

I'm throwing together a CD mix intended to be "Songs to Game By". I hope this thread will turn it into a multiple-volume set, but let's just see, shall we.

There isn't any one kind of gaming music so if all y'all would pop your favorite selections up here I'd be much olbiged.

Here's mine off the top of my head:
1. Oriff, Carmina Burana
2. Conan: The Barbarian Soundtrack
3. Ravel, Bolero
4. Ennio Morricone, Ecstasy of Gold
5. Metalica, Hero of the Day
6. Allman Brothers Band, Midnight Runner
7. The Matrix Soundtrack
8. All LotR Soundtracks
9. Star Wars, Cantina song
10. Vivaldi, Four Seasons

16. The 13th Warrior Soundtrack

Also, I have to second Morpheus' suggestion for the IceWind Dale soundtrack- great musical score on that one to game along with.

One of these days I'll take my list of 450 Classical CDs and separate out all the ones that I think would be good for D&D, and which "scenes" they might work for - eerie forest, sea voyage, desert travels, etc.

Then, whenever a thread about D&D music comes up, I can barf up a 12 page essay on esoteric, obscure modern Classical music that no one will bother to go out and purchase anyway. :)

But, if you want, I would start by purchasing Sibelius, Hovhaness, and Stravinsky. I would contend that Orff isn't necessarily a great D&D composer. I love Orff, don't get me wrong (his opera, Die Kluge, is my namesake), but there's better stuff out there, to be sure. Others, like Grieg, Nielsen, Penderecki, and Ince have great pieces of music that would suit most any campaign.

Mike Oldfield - albums like Voyager, The Songs of Distant Earth, Ommadawn, Incantations, Guitars, and Tr3s Lunas all make for great gaming music.

There are 2 Gladiator Movie Soundtrack albums. Try to get both.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World Movie Soundtrack. Good for battles on land and sea, and if you need party music for a noble's ball or a barnyard jig, there are a lot of stringed instrumentals.
