Big size category

I'm thinking of introducing another size category into my game, and I'd like to get some feedback. Essentially, I want to introduce a PC race that is larger than average, but not exactly Large. For lack of a better word, this is the Big size category.

Size: Big
Movement rate: 35 feet
Reach: when weilding large weapons, the character has an additional 5' reach.
AC: -1 to armor class. Big creatures are a little easier to hit than medium sized creatures.

So a Big creature, with a greatsword would have a 10' reach.

How they appear on the battlemat. I haven't yet decided, but I figured either:
a) They take up a 5x5 square, just like medium creatures
or
b) They take up a 10x5 square. Their stocky, but not so large as say an ogre.

If you look through the existing size categories, there could be many additions made in between many of the sizes. You could, for example, have some sizes in between Huge and Gargantuan. But, I think that you can just make this a case-by-case issue. For example, if Large is 8 to 16 feet tall (roughly) and Huge is 16 to 32 feet tall (roughly), then there's no reason why you couldn't have a Huge1 (16 to 24) and a Huge2 (24 to 32) and adjust the modifiers accordingly.

So, what you've done is no big deal. It's just a matter of amending the mechanics to apply to a minor deviation in the existing system.

maybe the powerfull build ability is what your looking for

for weapon size/damge, ability checks, grapple, and spell/special ability purposes the creature with this abilty is large

look at half-giants from expanded psionic's handbook
or goliaths from races of stone

Powerful Build (Ex): The physical stature of half-giants lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category larger. Whenever a half-giant is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the half-giant is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. A half-giant is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A half-giant can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

Thanks for the link to Powerful Build. That's about what I was looking for, except for the lack of reach. I may run with that, and tweak to fit my needs.

- hey, thanks everyone

No problem. If you want powerful build and reach, just give them powerful build and reach... there's no reason a Medium creature can't have 10' reach, although it's unusual.
