I think it will grow on you. I;ve been playing d&d since 1981. 1E, 2E, 3/3.5E and now 5E. 5E is the best IMO a few comments: 1. Advantage/rules: So the first time I DMed 5E I read the basic set but still had no idea what I was doing. At that point I had 35 years experience as a DM and still got it wrong ... A LOT. You are going to make a bunch of errors. In 5E the key is for the DM to make the call on the fly. Then study it before the next session and fess up if you did it wrong. Things like flanking, advantage, opportunity attacks we were all screwed up for about 10 games. "Wait cover is a -2/-5 and not disadvantage?" Unless you have a DM with a lot of experience this is going to happen in 5E. The main thing is DON'T spend a half hour trying to figure out the right way to do things at the table, DM should make a call and run with it at the table. Everyone needs to be ok with this. DM needs to be willing to say "ok I had it wrong" and player needs to be able to say "it is ok that you had it wrong". 2. Death: 5E is like 1E in that it is very easy to die. The first Goblin encounter from the essential set will TPK most of the time against players that don't knwo what they are doing .... and that essentials set is designed for players that don't know what they are doing! 3.Things you don't like: So to be clear are things like wild magic something YOU don't like or things YOUR TABLE doesn't like? If all the players and DM at the table don't like something it should not be there in 5E. The DM has the authority to make/change/alter any rules he wants. Now if you are the only player that doesn't like it, well that is a problem.
