In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... the A-Team. Wait, wrong mercenary group. This thread is actually about the Devil Dogs mercenary company which is mentioned, but not fully featured, in the story of the same name. Like many sanctioned mercenary organizations, the Devil Dogs are licensed and bonded security personnel, officially registered with and regulated by the governments they operate under. However, they have refused to join any mercenary guild or union, preferring to remain independent operators. This has earned them the enmity of many other mercenaries who do their best to squeeze the Devil Dogs out of jobs and contracts. Despite this, there has been a steady stream of jobs for the Devil Dogs as even the most hardened mercenary will think twice before cleaning out a dragon's lair or rooting out an undead infestation in the catacombs. For a Devil Dog, however, such challenges are a matter of course; many members were recruited specifically because they had prior experience in such matters. What's more, their price is both cheaper yet dearer than anything their rivals ask for; instead of concerning themselves with monetary wealth, they prefer to accumulate political power. All the company asks for is a single favor from their employer. It may be something to be performed immediately, such as the freeing of a rogue spellcaster, or it may be held in reserve until some time in the future when the Devil Dogs need assistance. Whatever it is, the task is always costly to the indebted. Many times has a poor man sought their assistance and obtained it, only to realize later that the price was greater than he thought. Despite this, their customers often have no choice but to accept the deal, due to the price of hiring other mercenaries and the unique capabilities the Devil Dogs possess. Though they number no more than 25 members, every one of them is a highly trained combatant. The basic combat package consists of a small, flexible group of 4 operators, covering the roles of scout, healer, arcanist, and warrior. Often, one person will cover multiple roles. For example, the assassin Kathryn Vern can serve as a thief, scout, and front line combatant at the same time, while combat medic Jeong Lam is a healer and fighter. As a group, the Devil Dogs consists of predominantly neutral mercenaries with a sizable minority of good aligned members. Evil applicants are refused admission due to the leaderships distrust of the inherent self-destructive aspects of the alignment. Several members are outcasts who would simply not be found in a more pedestrian mercenary guild, such as warforged, undead, and aberrations. The best method of contacting the Devil Dogs is through magical means as they operate out of a mobile airship and rarely stay in one place for long. Dwarven temples will relay messages to them for free, apparently due to a high priest of the faith "owing one".
