D&D 5E Building a butt kicking wizard

I have my heart set on a dwarf spellchucker. I don't care if he's a sorcerer or a wizard.

I just have no idea where to go beyond this. If anybody has any suggestions on spells or specific schools I should be looking at, let's hear them!

I'll be starting at 5th level, and joining a party with some rogues and some tanks.

I'd say go Fire Bloodline Dragon Sorcerer.

Pros:

-Free always-on Mage Armor.
-At lvl 6, free damage boost to your main attack spells (Fire Bolt, Scorching Ray, Fireball).
-Having a high Charisma character in the party always helps for social encounters.

Plus, at level five you can do every melee character's favorite caster trick: twin-cast Haste on your two best fighters.
