Character Death and The Rest of the Night

The solution is to not let this situation arise, by these or other means:
- always have at least one NPC in the party...a hench, a guide, whatever...for someone to play if needed (side effect: this also gives a drop-in guest something to do);
- allow and-or encourage players to run more than one PC at a time, so when one dies there's still another going (if both die, it's likely the party as a whole is in trouble, so the player will probably just want to watch the drama/carnage unfold);

Do NOT be tempted to let characters live when they otherwise shouldn't...

But, if someone dies and there's no other option available, let them start rolling up a replacement; even if the dead PC comes back, the new one can be used later as an NPC or whatever. The rest of the players can try to steer the party to somewhere a new PC might logically be met (town, usually) if the situation permits.

And, all that said, once in a rare while no matter what you do someone is just going to have to sit and watch, or call it an early night...can't be helped.
