I was thinking the same thing when I got BoVD. I suppose I have a fair bit of nostalgia tied up in the 1E MM, so I'm maybe a bit kinder to it than I should be. But, overall, I liked the 1E stuff better. Here's the breakdown, Prince by Prince: Demogorgon: 1E is slightly better. Its sketchy and literal, but the gloopy, monocolored Demogorgon from BoVD just doesnt work. Bendy-toy indeed. Jubilex: 1E, perhaps my favorite of the 1E pics. He's an active, angry looking demon, spraying fluids in very direction; covered in a splatter of eyes that would make Picasso proud. Hes not a green fungus lump on a stone table. Orcus: 1E. OK, this is where my bias starts to show. The BoVD pic is a fine rendering of a generic, big demon, but is it Orcus? No, Orcus has a fat tummy and a goat head, just like in the 1E picture. How do I know? Well, because thats the way it was in 1E. Yeenoghu: 3E. Always the worst pic in 1E; probably the best pic in 3E. Whats up with 1E Yeenoghu's wrist? The 3E Yeenoghu is brilliant though; not even a contest here. Graz'zt: 3E by default. He didnt exist back in 1E, so he wins this one for free. On its own merits, is there something odd about his left upper arm? Pretty short, and not because its foreshortened. He's also not exactly the master of seductive charm, despite his dangly codpiece. But not "huh?"-inspiring like the Demogorgon.
