Indeed, part of the reason you have arrived at Muntburg so late is because Midgrim had turned to stone half way down the mountain. When dwarves are 'interred' it's usually in what the dwarves call a "hall of memories" which is a room, sometimes even a garden where the statues of the deceased are placed, typically with a small plaque commemorating their deeds. However, these halls typically only exist in larger dwarven communities.
