It’s not “cool.” And indeed, the vast majority of interesting characters out there in popular fiction don’t fall into that mold. Batman’s a much more interesting character than Superman. Wolverine’s a lot more popular than Captain America. Even Conan, who was never written to be the deepest of characters, seems to have a little more to him as a person than, say, King Arthur. James Bond and Jack Sparrow, Han Solo and Dean Winchester, and so on and so forth. Some are characters who bend the rules if it means accomplishing the greater good; some are just amoral souls who happen to drift a little more toward good than evil.
