Game Storm Warning!

Forecasters predict tidal surge of fun and excitement as GameStorm 10 barrels toward Portland OR

With just over one week to go, GameStorm shows no signs of slowing down. More guests have been confirmed, more events scheduled and more publishers will be participating. Here’s an update:

Guests

In addition to Guests of Honor Jay Tummelson and Robin D. Laws, we have commitments from Dan Rowen (Playroom Entertainment), Rob Heinsoo (D&D 4th Ed. lead developer), Jonathan Tweet (D&D 3rd Ed. developer, creator of Everway co-creater of Ars Magica. And Over the Edge”), Kevin Clark (lead designer for Privateer Press), Dan Brandt (Quartermaster for Privateer Press), James Ernest (Cheapass Games), Mike Selinker, Kris Havlak (Countess Games), Michael Nickoloff (Third World Games), Alex Flagg (Crafty Games), Lisa Steenson (designer of Red Neck Life board game), and Randall N. Bills (designer of Classic Battletech), Also, representatives from two regional hobby distributors, Matt Hyland from Devir US and Rob Merickel from GTS Distribution, will also be participating. We are also pleased to welcome Gut-Bustin’ Games and 1i Productions to our roster of participating publishers.

Event Highlights

ProtoSpiel West Board Game Design Conference – To satisfy demand, we have added an additional formal playtest session on Friday evening and an “open” session Friday afternoon. Several more of our participating professional game designers, publishers and distributors will be on hand to evaluate new designs. Jay Tummelson offers the keynote address on Saturday.

Indie Hurricane RPG Forum – The folks from GoPlay PDX have pulled out all the stops to present the very best in cutting-edge RPG design. There will be numerous small press events and demos, plus thoughtful discussion about the future of interactive games. Products from Indie Press Revolution’s catalog will be available for sale.

Trail of Cthulhu Live! – RPG Guest of Honor Robin D. Laws leads an audience participation scenario based on the Gumshoe system from Pelgrane Press. Observers determine the outcome of each exciting action by bidding cold hard cash! All proceeds benefit our charities, the Portland Schools Foundation and the Susan Petrey Clarion Writers Scholarship.

Mechwarrior/Classic Battletech Crossover – Catalyst Game Labs and WizKids Games have joined forces to present this unique crossover event that carries the RPG action onto the battlefield. When diplomacy fails, it’s time to launch your strike! There will also be Classic Battletech events running throughout the weekend.

Rio Grande-A-Thon 10th Anniversary Tournament – Presented by Rainy Day Games – Play as many RG games as you can squeeze in between Friday and Saturday, earning points for each game title played, number of players, and finishing position, weighted by game length and complexity. The highest weekend total wins a unique prize from Jay Tummelson.

Killer Bunnies “Breeding Frenzy” Tournament – Two-hour heats on Friday and Saturday seed a table of finalists on Sunday. Each heat uses a different expansion, while the final features the newest expansion. Expect some great prizes for all finishers from Dan Rowen of Playroom Entertainment.

WizKids Extravaganza – Constructed and sealed events for all WizKids game lines, all weekend long, including some unique events like the “Heroes vs. Villains Grudge Match.” Expect some spectacular prizes (Galactus, anyone? How about a giant AT-AT!) for Pirates, Star Wars Pocket Models, Mechwarrior, Horrorclix, HeroClix and the new Halo ActionClix.

CCGs Return to GameStorm – Constructed, Sealed and Open events for Legend of the Five Rings, Magic: The Gathering, World of Warcraft, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, and more!

High School Drama Button Men Tournament - Just when you thought it was safe to put away your Button Men, Shifting Skies games revives the franchise! High School Drama creator Boyan Radakovich has created eponymous Button Men. Now you can roll off against that Jock, Nerd, Cheerleader or Goth that you despised and show who’s the real Leader of the Class.

Living Arcanis – The Emerald Society presents adventures for Paradigm Concepts’ Living Arcanis and Witchhunter RPGs. With the RPGA caught up in the transition to D&D 4th edition, now may be a great time to check out the next most popular organized play RPG.

WarMachine/Hordes “Tour of Duty” Tournaments – Privateer Press runs 350 pt. “Rage and Rivets” tournaments all weekend long, and the Faction with the best record over the course of the convention earns bragging rights and fabulous prizes!

RPGA – With Living Greyhawk coming to an end, and Forgotten Realms preparing to transition to 4th Edition, here’s your chance to get in your last licks with your current characters, as our RPGA team fills a ballroom with sword-swingin’ spell-slingin’ action and adventure. Watch for our regional WotC Delegate to present a look at the new D&D Minis 2nd ed. Rules as well, a harbinger of things to come. Guardian Games will also be running several sealed and constructed D&D Minis events. Finally, Rob Heinsoo, lead developer for D&D 4e will be on hand to discuss the new rules set.

Games Workshop – Chris Ewick of The Game Matrix and local Outriders join forces to present a weekend full of battles for Warhammer 40K, including a 5000 pt. Apocalypse Mega-Battle and several 3 round Rogue Trader Tournaments.

Battles in Time - GameStorm brings a touch of history to the tabletop with miniatures events for Flames of War, Axis and Allies, De Bellis Antiquitatis, and Wings of War.

Guitar Hero/Rock Band Tournament and Jam Sessions – Playing nightly at GameStorm, rock out to the hottest licks and the sweetest tunes. Show the world that you’re a rock god! Prizes will be awarded.

Live-Action Roleplaying – Last year’s convention saw an explosion of raw creative energy and unbridled enthusiasm among our Live Action teams. This year’s highlights include: scenarios for Vampire and Changeling from The Camarilla, Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk, Divus Ex, Og, and Are You A Werewolf?

Dealers Room/Exhibit Hall

GameStorm expands its Dealers Room with a slew of regional publishers, including Catalyst Game Labs, Countess Games, Crafty Games, Playroom Entertainment, Shifting Skies Games, Flying Buffalo, Atarashi Games, Crucifiction Games and Pagan Publishing. Retailers include Rainy Day Games, Guardian Games, Games Plus, The Game Matrix, Aunt Franny’s Toys, Reviresco, Pegasus Publishing and Gallant Hand’s Gamer Gear.

Our 2008 venue, the Red Lion on the Quay, is situated on the north bank of the Columbia River in Vancouver Washington, just over the bridge from Portland Oregon and just off of I-5.. GameStorm events begin on Friday, March 28th at 8 a.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 30th.
