His family was wealthy, and was able to send their son to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Cairo for his education. Jibril was a good student, but his interests tended more toward the secular than the religious, and he wanted to bring the benefits of modernity he saw being enjoyed by the British (who ruled Egypt at the time) to Arabia and his family. When the Great War broke out, and it became clear that the Ottomans threatened Arabia, Jibril return home, and announced his intention to leave school and aid the British war effort against the Turks. He and his father argued , for while the older man did not want to see the Turks ruling over Arabia, neither did he want the British to control it. "Whether the tyrant is in Istanbul or London, he is still a tyrant. We must trust in God, Jibril, not these foreign theives. You are young and blind. Let the mulahs open your eyes a fe more years. Then you may take up a gun with a righteous purpose." </p><p> </p><p>He send to boy back to Cairo with his uncle, and Jibril continued his schooling for two more years, until a man named T.E. Lawrence began leading an army of Arabs against the Turks near Aqabah, and Jibril knew he would never forgive himself if he did not take part in the liberationof his own country. He left the university, and presented himself to the British military. He had learned English well, and somehow convinced a commander that he would be useful to them as a scout. He enlisted with a small group of other educated Arabs, and trained trained with a British-Egyptian officer named Owen Black. </p><p> </p><p>*still writing*</p><p>3. Saw only one battle, and almost all of his companions were killed - he got shellshocked. When the time the War ended, the British declined to give true independance tot he Arabs, thus proving Jibril's father right. He felt he couldn't home, and so he made his way to America </p><p>4. Struggled, until and American vet tried to help him by introducing him to painting as a way to work through his troubles. </p><p>5. Had a gift for it - sold some paintings , made enough to pay for some therapy and eventually, tuition at NYU, where he studies art. </p><p>6. His best paintings are very, very dark. He's not even sure he understand what they mean sometimes; "They're for getting thoughts out, not putting them back in once I'm rid of them," he explains.
