Since 5E and the Adventurers League launched in summer 2014, there have been six month long seasons each with its related storylines. Each season there has been one or more Epics (at top-tier cons only), many Expeditions (short-form adventures in loose "campaign", and Encounters (the first part of the hardcover adventure for the season available free in PDF for stores). You could play the same character in all of them, theoretically dropping in and out, between games, and even among different stores and conventions - although it was much better to have separate characters for the Expeditions and the Encounters (which adventure you could continue through the rest of the story in hardcover as long as someone bought it). The Expeditions don't have to be played in order, although there are some level restrictions. The previous storylines were 1) Tyranny of Dragons, which included two hardcovers - Hoard of the Dragon Queen and its sequel Rise of Tiamat, as well as related adventures for the Expeditions in Phlan on the Moonsea. 2) Elemental Evil, with Princes of the Apocalypse as the Encounters/hardcover campaign, and Expeditions moving onto Mulmaster 3) Rage of Demons, with Out of the Abyss Enc/HC, and Exp in Hillsfar. Now there are many sudden changes, with the three seasons of Expeditions being made available for sale to everyone (including those stores who did not already download their free copies). "Expeditions" as a name has been cut, the Encounters pdf is being replaced by 12-16 hours of Launch Event material, which after next season will be _not_ coming from the hardcover. Epics are still in place, there is still the hardcover, the adventures-formerly-known-as-Expeditions are going to be a short-form campaign consisting of many mini-modules for sale to anyone, and the launch event material for stores. Some of this stuff is explained here (http://dnd.wizards.com/playevents), but there have been lots of changes in the last few weeks, and it's not all clear to the best of us yet...
