I think there are just different brands of hard-core. There are collectors, I work at a used bookstore so I see these a lot. They will buy absolutely any book from any system whether they intend to play it or not. There are rules/builds folk. They know far more minutiae than I will ever know. And then there are the people who are just dedicated to gaming. I think I fall into that category, it's probably where a lot of people here do. People who would rather be gaming than doing just about anything else. If the game doesn't stop until 8 in the morning and I work at 9, there is no way I'm leaving the table. When we moved across the country I got online and looked for people to game with in my area before I'd even bought furniture! As to promoting the hobby, I think the best thing to do is run a game for new folk. I'm running a game for people in their late 20's early 30's who have never played because they were intimidated by learning the rules. Its really fun to watch someone get hooked!
