The Orc's Eye Tavern was as rowdy a frontier tavern as you were ever likely to find. Run by a surly half-orc who had long ago retired from Vedlund's scouts, the tavern had a reputation for brawls, fights, and mayhem. Still, it was busy most nights because it was the only place to get a good drink in the small barony. Vedlund's scouts regularly stopped there on their way out to patrol and on their way in to report. Captain Astor was there this night waiting. Waiting for those brave...or foolish...enough to answer his call for volunteers. He didn't have the experience or presence to order his scouts to take on this mission. He had the authority, to be certain, and they'd follow orders, but they didn't respect him...not yet. And that could be lethal in the middle of a battle. Chkikn had arrived earlier that day. The trip from the capitol was short, though the stone quarries along the way had given him a chill for some strange reason. Now, he was alone in a corner, the other tavern patrons avoiding him, due to both his appearance and his smell. Peregrin Badgerfoot had just arrived. The surly half-orc owner of the place had looked at him strangely with his good eye, as if he recognized him. The half-orc had said nothing beyond getting the halfling a drink, however, and now Peregrin sat at the bar. A human woman entered the tavern in a hurry, knocking over Peregrin's drink. Donall Harkness had also arrived a bit early and had just finished a decent meal. He happened to glance up just as someone new entered the tavern...his cousin, Elsa. She seemed to be in a bit of a hurry as she bumped into an odd looking halfling, knocking over his drink. Kowl had been in Vedlund for several days, arriving with the most recent silver ore shipment from Silvergard. There had been a raid on the caravan and one of the wagons full of ore had been taken, along with nearly a dozen dwarves and a halfling appraiser by the name of Ventira Tal, a member of the prominent Tal trade family. Now, the dwarf found himself seated with Astor. Annika Demrok was approaching the tavern as the sun set, the last rays of light shining on the mountains to the east like rivers of molten gold. There was much beauty in this land, untamed though it was. As she turned her attention back to her destination, she noted a human woman entering the tavern in some haste. A man in a scout's dusty and well-worn uniform, standing with a group of similarly dressed men, suddenly shouted after her, "Thief! You come back here with my coin pouch!"
