Five days ago you left the growing town of Al’Thos in employ of the merchant house Malenna. It seemed a relatively easy ‘gig’ for the only threats that were rumored to exist on the road to Lothis (your destination) were wandering tribes of rhodin---not a threat to such a large caravan group as the one you are part of. Last night, that assumption proved horribly wrong. The crisp dawn air seems to dance with the songs of morning birds---their symphony continues to play on despite the carnage the dawn light reveals. The ‘carnage’ began just a few hours after the deepest part of the night. It began as the screams of hobbled horses alerted less than alert guards to the large beetles than began attacking them. As the guards rushed to the defense of the horses, fire arrows flew into flesh & wood as both man & wagon were set aflame. Then, in orderly (almost militaristic) maneuvers, many rhodin began attacking those that were waking up to the sounds of battle. A fierce battle of flesh, steel, & arcane energy continued until the first rays of light heralding the new day. Many men lay dead & dying. Of the thirty other men that made up merchant house’s guard, only ten survive, though they bear evidence of the night’s terror. The verrik merchant leading this group, Sanja’la Morne, still survives though she is obviously in shock. Only four wagons & seven horses remain. The only evidence of the enemy that remains is one dead leather clad rhodin & the dead beetle that was dragging him back into the woods….
