Distant cousins of the current Chief, Rangi and his family own a rather large plantation about two miles outside of the village. Mainly producing coconuts and mangoes, the plantation is rather prosperous. As a result, Wai has grown up as a somewhat spoiled child -- only his winning smile and generally good nature prevent him from being a truly annoying individual.</p><p></p><p>Wai's mother died giving birth when Wai was 3 years old. His only maternal influences are his grandmother (Moana) and Afa, an O'Punga that helps work his father's plantation. Moana recently decided to move to the village itself, as the walk from the plantation is getting to be too much for her aged body.</p><p></p><p>Other than his father, Wai truly looks up to one person... or rather, her memory. Wai's great grandmother Tama was a powerful sorcerer with a great knowledge of weather spells. It is through her that he gets his talents. While he is an indifferent student at best, his one scholarly accomplishment has been to learn how to understand the knotted cords left behind by his great grandmother. These knotted cords and an old cloak of Tama's are kept on the plantation. While his father could not deny his son the simple Coral Bracers Tama used to wear, he feels the rest of her belongings might be dangerous and keeps them locked away.</p><p></p><p>Wai's most prized possession is the pair of Coral Bracers that used to belong to Tama. The minor protective magic embedded in the Coral is far less important to him than the fact that his idolized great grandmother used to wear them. He also has a halfspear that Afa's husband Fetu carved for him, tipped with a chunk of obsidian that he traded for himself.</p><p></p><p>Wai's young life has been one of relative ease. On a day to day basis, he helps his father and the workers on the plantation. When he can get time, he practices his few spells in a secluded corner of the lagoon. Generally, he uses his magic missiles to kill small fish to add to his father's table. While it isn't a significant addition to their food supply, Wai felt vaguely guilty the first few times he killed the fish and left them behind.</p><p></p><p>About the only regret in Wai's life is that he will likely never have a chance at the woman he has an enormous crush on -- Chief Makea's daughter Ru-Hina. The lovely young lady will most likely be married to someone with more influence than Wai will ever have... not that he has ever had the guts to tell her of his feelings for her. It is something of a joke among Wai's friends that he moons after Ru-Hina whenever he sees her, but completely loses his composure when she is nearby.</p></blockquote><p></p>
