Apparently, this was the secret hideaway of Merlin, who was trapped in the tree by the Temptress Nimue, never to escape. The staff told Magus that the young man had innate magical energy, and that is how the way here had opened to him. It invited him to use his power of imagination to train himself, as England's great Wizard could not be there to do so himself, and the world needed protection. Magus's imagination turned out to be very similar to the D&D games he loved so much, and thus most of the spells he mastered best are similar to D&D magic.
