The sort of middle aged, single-racial, single working parent, first marraige, church going, hardworking, two point two kid family that exists largely in statistical averages, not real life. Trent now works for the agribusiness that bought his father's ranchland as a vice president in charge of...being on the board, mostly, since the contract of sale stipulated that the descendants Mathers would have a board position when it came to the dispensation of the land. An effort to provide for his family in the future, and to ensure that the company didn't just section it up and sell it off in parcels without a Mathers to approve the deal. In practice, it means the company gives Trent a largely ceremonial position, far from the minds that make policy. Peggy works at home, and is fiercely proud of her position as homemaker. They are devout Baptists, with a hint of born-againism, have a dog for Trent and a cat for Peggy, and own a house just outside Arlington, Texas. It used to be farther outside...but the city keeps creeping closer and closer.</p><p></p><p>Their son, Bryce, is a burly, athletic boy who's attending Arlington State with a major in football. Or would be, if it was offered. Technically there's some classes involved, but mostly he's in for the game. The first freshman MVP in over ten years, Bryce is the darling of the family, with portraits prominently displayed and a large glass and aluminum case for his trophies. Bryce has a simple, but powerful mind...not stupid in the least, but with little patience for subtleties. He prefers direct, obvious solutions followed by dealing with whatever the consequences are. Presented with a Rubik's Cube, he'd likely bust it apart, put it back together correctly, and pay for any damages caused to the cube, or by cube pieces as they flew apart. This is not because he'd necessarily be incapable of solving it normally, but because he would view his way as being a better, more intelligent solution than slaving away over it for minutes or hours or however long it took; wasting time that could be spent on other, more fulfilling activities.</p><p></p><p>Tess is another story. She has the dark hair her father has, and the clear green eyes of her mother. She is quite pretty and speaks with a rather fetching Texas accent. It is here that her conformance with social stereotypes of the region end. Tess is, despite the best efforts of father and mother, an intellectual. She learned to read early and well, and would often become so engrossed in her reading that she'd become oblivious to her surroundings. Disagreements between she and the rest of the family on intractable subjects like politics, religion, and curfew times led to Tess feeling stifled at the family home. After going through a period of punkish rebellion during high school, she straightened out in time to go to college...at Washington State U. It was the source of a huge fight. Close ties with professor leads to being TA as a grad student and helping prof on research. Experiment involving the creation of artificial gravity using high energy electromagnetic field effects goes awry when she's accidentally (??!!!) sealed inside the shielded chamber and failsafes...fail. Artificial gravity field creates a momentary event horizon, subjecting Tess to extreme forces. She breaks out while trying to stop herself from getting sucked, and is able to negate the gravity's effect on her in time to avoid that fate...then uses her new power to seal the black hole shut. More stuff happens afterwards. This is just a summary for me to expound on later, folks.
