As the Seekers travel with this young man, they get a sense that he knows his way through these hills. And at times he may not know his way, he still seems at ease as little seems to phase him. After avoiding a fight with Bugbears through a few well tossed insults and a bottle of liquor, questions arise that Luvaine attempts to answer around the camp fire. Less common knowledge is he was captured by Chulkas’ clan. Chulkas was executed for his shame. Luvaine was rewarded with slavery for helping eliminate a dangerous rival of the chief. He was given increasing freedom as he proved useful in the community. And he came to see the Bugbears not as savages but a community struggling to survive in a tough environment surrounded by dangerous enemies. At night he took to releasing himself from his shackles but always reattached them in the morning. Then came the strange day that the Gorgon stumbled upon their camp. It was startled and panicked by the scramble of fleeing Bugbears. Some flung axes and clubs, wounding the beast, but sending it into a fury. Once again shedding his shackles, Luvaine climbed a nearby tree as a strange fog issued from the beast, causing more screams. The chief leveled a giant crossbow at the beast and staggered it with the shot. On a wild impulse, Luvaine risked his life to save the one who spared him. He dropped from the tree, a previously snatched large knife in his hand. He came down on the creatures back delivering a mighty blow to its neck, felling the beast. Luvaine was awarded his freedom and choose to continue living in the community, now as an honored resident. The chief allowed Luvaine the honor to skin the Gorgon and remove its horns. The clan’s shaman disappeared with the hide, only later to present him with the leather armor at a ceremony making him an official member. Many of those he pelted with ingots were there to congratulate him. He was given the name bar-Boere. The Boere is the Bugbear blade used for skinning. It was a reference to the Gorgon and his previous encounter with Chulkas. The knife he used to kill the beast was also presented to him, now hafted with one of the horns, its mate was tucked into the belt of the chief. The Chief’s eventual demise sees that his welcome ends as younger more violent members rise to power. Sadly Lavaine leaves the hills, but comes to thrive in the taverns of human society where tricks and conniving prove to be endless fun, and games of skill test his eye and wits. As for his former master, the blacksmith Latherne was financially ruined by the state of his arrival. His forge made the trip but all his equipment and start up supply was lost. There are those who find the occasional item in the Iron Pass and quickly discard the item, believing it to be a piece of Latherne’s Loss.
