What happened?”</p><p></p><p>“You know- Murder- someone died.” Growls the scarred Watch officer.</p><p></p><p>The apparent Watch Leader steps out of the room. “Move on. It doesn’t concern you unless you knew the person living here.”</p><p></p><p>“No. Sorry.” And they move down the hallway a bit near a vender with suspicious looking fruit for sale.</p><p></p><p>“Did you see?” asks the Halfling.</p><p></p><p>“Shelves were ransacked. Everything is on the floor.” Says Kar-Draith.</p><p></p><p>“The lock on the door was melted- not picked.” She adds. They look at Hardfist.</p><p></p><p>Startled as he comes out of a daydream the goliath mumbles…. “doorframe needs dusting.” Then goes silent as he returns to his happy thoughts.</p><p></p><p>“We need to get in there to snoop… I mean look around.” Says the Halfling. “Any ideas?”</p><p></p><p>“A distraction. Could you distract the Watch Hardfist?” asks the lizardfolk.</p><p></p><p>“Uh…. Yes.”</p><p></p><p>Kar-Draith immediately regrets suggesting it in fear of what the simple minded goliath will do and how much bail money they have remaining.</p><p></p><p>First the goliath tries making faces at them. They don’t see him or ignore him. Frowning he clears his throat and does it again. Nothing. With a humph and a twitch of his jaw and nose, the big man moves down to a door that looks locked. He stops, sizes it up. Turns to his friends giving a thumbs-up complete with his tongue poking out from the corner of his mouth and steps back.</p><p></p><p>“Oh….. he isn’t….” begins the Halfling.</p><p></p><p>“Yup. He is.” Finishes the archer.</p><p></p><p>=CRASH= as the goliath slams the door. The city watch all come out of the room to see what is happening. The Watch Leader sends the two others after him as she uses a magical locking wand to secure the lockless door to the crime scene. She then hurries off herself as Hardfist makes a face at the two charging guards before seemly jumping off the rail of a bridge.</p><p></p><p>It takes the artificer a few moments to figure out the locking magic and how to undo it. They open the door and reclose it behind them. Soon after, they hear Hardfist running by laughing and after that a few gasping tired guards trying to keep up with the big man.</p><p></p><p>Indeed, the large shelf with books and journals has been emptied onto the floor. Diana with Gears checks this out as Kar-Draith checks out the two large tables with alchemy tubes and mixtures. Little is found. It appears Darren was a petty alchemist that made things to sell. The books have recipes for things that were not normal everyday things. He made things for thieves and adventurers to use. Most likely sold on the black market.</p><p></p><p>The door leading onto the balcony is unlocked. The Halfling goes here to look around. The balcony is roughly five stories over the nearest street / bridge way below. It wouldn’t be an easy climb though Hardfist would do it.</p><p></p><p>Unhappy with finding little of use, they step outside and relock the door by closing the magical locks she opened. “Find what you were looking for?” asks the merchant with the fermenting fruit.</p><p></p><p>“No.” says the lizardfolk.</p><p></p><p>“Did you know Darren?” asks the Halfling.</p><p></p><p>“Know him? No,” he pauses for drama, “Know who visited him perhaps.” The merchant smiles with an outstretched hand.</p><p></p><p>The lizardman considers cutting it off.</p><p></p><p>Twitching, the Halfling gives him a silver.</p><p></p><p>“He has had several visitors in the past week. They come at odd hours as I am preparing to leave. A human, a dwarf and a beautiful female.”</p><p></p><p>Enjoying being the center of attention, the merchant continues. “Sometimes an orc or ½ orc would join them. He stunk of rot and sludge. They wore tattered brown robes. Dirty and nasty also. The man had a strange tattoo on his arm. It looked like a dragonmark but colored red.</p><p></p><p>“Any names?”</p><p></p><p>“Darren sometimes spoke to them as Tarkanan.”</p><p></p><p>“Anything else?”</p><p></p><p>The man holds his hand out again.</p><p></p><p>Rolling her eyes, the Halfling pulls out another silver. “That’s TWO Silver……..”</p><p></p><p>“Yes. The woman I know…. Well know of. She goes by the professional name of ‘Precious’. She works at the Blue Fox.</p><p></p><p>“Blue Fox…. It is…. What and where….” Asks the Halfling with some impatience.</p><p></p><p>Blue Fox is located below here in the Dragoneyes. It is a brothel.</p><p></p><p>“Oh.” Is all the Halfling can summon.</p><p></p><p>Finished with the merchant, the three of them (Diana, Gears and Kar-Draith) inspect the damage made by Hardfist. The merchant there sells boxes and clears his throat.</p><p></p><p>“Yes?” asks Diana.</p><p></p><p>“ I may know something as well. I couldn’t help but notice everything.”</p><p></p><p>“Boxes?,” asks the Halfling looking at the merchant’s goods, “Anything special about them?”</p><p></p><p>“All well made. Some magical.”</p><p></p><p>“How?” asks the Halfling looking them over. There are many boxes of different materials and make. </p><p></p><p>“I have magical boxes that conceal their true identities.” The Halfling looks up at him with distrust. “I have a box that blocks ANY detection spell known…. Or un-known. I also have a box that changes the appearance of anything within it for a few hours. One could make a copper coin look like a gold.”</p><p></p><p>“Sounds illegal.”</p><p></p><p>“Shoosh. Don’t speak of such terms of perspective. Would you like?”</p><p></p><p>“No but you said you may know something about the murder.”</p><p></p><p>“Not the murder but who visited Darren. The dwarf he mentioned has a name.” The familiar stretching out of a hand occurs. Kar-Draith pays for this one. The silver is placed in a box and with a wave and a quiet command word spoken a gold coin comes out. “Chill. The dwarf goes by the name of Chill. He is a low level mage and works at the Blue Fox.</p><p></p><p>The two look at each other and nod. Next stop- The Blue Fox.</p><p></p><p>As they leave the goliath reappears.
