Originally posted by RealAlHazred: All for One With the rise of tensions in the city, Rilsa Rael feels that she needs to speak for all Outer City residents, but especially those from Calimshan. While most of them owe her enough favors that their support is guaranteed, there are some merchants with broad enough connections and family ties that they can flout her assumed authority. One such holdout is the human Lady Sala Nidris, a merchant and Calishite expatriate. She normally resides in the city of Neverwinter up the coast, but recent events there have caused her to bring her son Zan to visit relatives in Baldur’s Gate on a recuperative vacation; her trade connections with the Eomane, Redlocks, and Vannath patriar families ensured that this would be a working vacation for her even as it took her son away from his troubles. She has been staying in Little Calimshan with her brother-in-law, the widower Mahmoud, who sold candied and exotic fruits in the Wide with his two daughters. Mahmoud was killed during the Founder’s Day massacre, and Lady Nidris found her stay extended in order to deal with his effects and the disposition of his daughters. Under Lady Nidris’ guidance, Mahmoud’s daughters have repeatedly rejected the financial aid Rael offered them. Their affairs in order, Lady Nidris has made arrangements to depart the city; the perceptive merchant princess can tell that something dangerous is afoot. In order to demonstrate to the rest of Little Calimshan the benefits of standing united, Rael's agents have led a bigoted Watch commander to believe that Lady Nidris has used her connections to enable her to smuggle goods out of the city without paying the tariff. He orders a patrol to search her luggage for contraband, telling them to deliver a beating to anyone who resists. In the Guild’s Employ: If the characters are working for Rael, she asks them to protect Lady Nidris’ family and retainers while they are still in Baldur’s Gate. Lady Nidris stops by the mansions of her patriar contacts in the Upper City to pick up trade goods prior to boarding the ship that will take her home. While Lady Nidris, her son Zan, and three patriar retainers are in the streets of the Upper City, a Watch patrol (six Watch soldiers and a sergeant) shows up and brusquely demands to go through the Lady’s belongings. While Lady Nidris argues with the Watch sergeant about this, the soldiers fan out. One of them roughly pulls Zan from his perch on a crate, thinking that the youth is helping to hide the goods, and throws him to the ground. One of the Lady’s retainers hits the soldier in retaliation, and the melee begins. Not Working for the Guild: If the characters are not associated with the Guild, Rael has sent two thugs to protect Lady Nidris as a “sign of support,” but has underestimated the Watch’s response. The characters may be on hand when it happens, and if so will see the Watch members overwhelming Lady Nidris’ guards with unnecessary force. The heroes’ intervention will earn Lady Nidris’ gratitude (both in money and in influence) and will earn positive notice from Rilsa Rael, who didn’t want to lose a prominent Calishite. If the characters fail to intervene, the patrol lashes out when they find no contraband, killing one of the Lady’s guards and crippling Zan. This causes a public outcry in the Outer City, which weakens Lord Silvershield’s support while strengthening Rael’s position. If the adventurers kill a Watch member, they are labeled murderers and treated accordingly.
