Papolstaanas eventually manages to control his laughter for long enough to take a few deep, noisy breaths, but by the time he is able to speak again, the big orc has already left with his friends. Papolstaanas can't help but feel disappointed; the orc seemed friendly, and also quite dangerous, with that huge axe. He might have made a good companion. But what was his name? Fenwick? That can't be right. That's not an orcish name. Papolstaanas slides his backpack off his shoulders and lays it down on the bench, which he then shoves closer to the table. Climbing up on top of it, he finds that the table is now at a more comfortable height for him. A serving boy approaches purposefully and Papolstaanas asks, "Do you know the name of that orc that was just in here?" "It's Fenwick," replies the boy. So it is Fenwick. But it doesn't matter; he isn't likely to run into the orc again, and anyway, his mother would never approve. What would he do if he and Fenwick became friends and his mother saw them? Could he hide Fenwick somewhere? Perhaps under one of the bigger tables. He would fit! But that's stupid; it wouldn't work. His mother is small enough to see under without ducking. "Do you want something?" asks the boy. Papolstaanas comes out of his reverie. "Like what?" The boy rolls his eyes. "Like a drink," he says. "Like this is a tavern." Papolstaanas thinks about asking for some juice, but decides against looking more foolish than he already does. And he does feel like something stronger, actually, although he doesn't usually drink alcohol. "What do you have that's strong?" "How strong?" "I want it pretty strong," admits Papolstaanas. "There's some stuff that just got in--Fazul's or Fizul's or something. Supposed to have a real kick." "I'll have one of those." "Well, all right then," says the boy. The drink is in a small cup that, for a kobold, is still plenty big enough. Papolstaanas follows his first gulp with a fit of coughing, but as he then takes another without collapsing or turning any greener than he is already, the boy soon tires of watching and wanders away again. Papolstaanas considers the others in the tavern. Two humans, one dwarf. But the humans seem like they might be having a private conversation, and who ever heard of a kobold making friends with a dwarf? Adventurers aren't that crazy. Are they? With a sigh, Papolstaanas takes another sip of his drink and opens his copy of Homilies of Azantia to a random page.
