OD&D OD&D white box, still in shrink wrap!

The seller bought it off ebay in 2012 so maybe he shrink wrapped it. $800 is a pretty good investment, considering how much other things sell for.

From the 4th printing (Nov 1975) on, they were sold shrink-wrapped, in the white box. 1st-3rd were wood grain and not shrink-wrapped.

6th and 7th printings (the ones that say "Original Collector's Edition" on the cover) were indeed sold in shrink-wrap according to The Acaeum.

(My own set is a 6th printing, and beat all to hell, but I wouldn't have it any other way—because I quite like not being horrified at the thought of taking it out and using it at the game-table. )

Mine is 6th or 7th and in pretty good nick. I can't see myself ever selling it though.
