Bresk After saving the fleeing nobles, the heroes learn some frightening news: the soldiers just encountered are members of King Steppengard’s new secret police force, the Talon, and just three days earlier the king’s entire family was slaughtered. His five eldest children, ranging in ages from twelve to seventeen, were at a party in which everyone was slaughtered, cut to pieces, with no sign of the assassins. Within minutes of their deaths, the King’s wife and his thirteen younger children were killed by poison at dinner, a fate that Steppengard only managed to escape because one of his nobles came to him complaining about the Ragesian ambassador. Continuing on to Bresk with the still unconscious body of Balan, the ambassador of Seaquen, the heroes find a dark and subdued city. Taking lodging at an inn called The Golden Griffon, the heroes manage to heal Balan of his wound and make arrangements for their audience with the king. It is hoped that they will be able to convince him of the danger of his alliance with Ragesia. To this end, some legwork is done [information on the various Council of Nine members is listed under their NPC headings in the wiki]. As prepared as possible, the heroes meet with the king, but things do not go well. His gnome adviser, Nina Glibglammer, is clearly hostile to the Seaquen party and, after imprisoning Jinis (the proxy of Lord Gallo and the fellow to whom the party was intending to deliver the letter from his son) for supposed complicity in the assassination plot, she turned her suspicion upon the party. Unfortunately, Balan chose this moment to undergo some sort of seizure and collapsed to the ground, unconscious. The party was left, therefore, to convince the king of the error of his ways and to sway the various members of the Council of Nine that were in attendance. Also present at the audience were Serrimus, the ambassador from Ragesia, and Torrax, an Inquisitor. The party, led primarily by Reogar and Merrick, managed a decent representation, but it seemed that many of the nobles were unconvinced, and King Steppengard seemed disinclined to alter his deal with Ragesia. After the audience, Balan recovered and the proxies for Lady Timor and Lord Dashgoban expressed their sympathy and encouraged the heroes not to give up hope just yet. The Ragesian delegation also visited the heroes and barbs were traded. Reogar did a bit of exploring in the castle and discovered the Ragesians in the dungeon, participating in torture and generally being mean.
