Prologue - The Drawing - Dougan Hadsive It had started with a slight irritation in her throat; something that he had suggested was due to her being caught in the first of the early spring showers that arrived in Falcon Hollow before the warmth of the changing season arrived. The following morning the irritation had turned into a deep rattling cough and he had fetched some honey to mix with her tea to help soothe her throat until it passed. He did not want to worry her that it seemed others in town were also coming down with whatever it was she had caught, but Dougan was sure that Charissa would be fine. While they had only been in Falcon Hollow a short time, and would only be here until her family calmed down about their impulsive marriage, it did not take long for them to realize that if one person caught something in town, everyone did. It was not until the next morning when Charissa coughed so hard that scarlet stained her lips and her lungs rattled with each breath that Dougan knew something was terribly wrong, but did not know how to help his young bride. Holding her hand, he promised to visit Laurel’s shop and see if the local herbalist could offer any assistance. While he knew their funds were running low, thus far, he had kept his promise to work a job that did not involve him wearing his blades, but if it took their last coin to help her, he would spend it. As he approached Roots and Remedies, Dougan saw the line stretching out the door already and rubbed his hand across his throat to massage the tightness from it. It would not do to come down with a case of sympathy sickness when Charissa needed him focused and clear headed when he spoke with Laurel, but an uncertain voice whispered in the back of his mind all the same as he saw the crowd of people gathered in front of the shop. “What if you have it also?”
