Privateer Press, Inc. (privateerpress.com) based in Bellevue, WA publishes award-winning games and supplements including the tabletop miniatures wargames WARMACHINE and HORDES and the Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy role-playing setting. In addition, Privateer publishes the bimonthly No Quarter Magazine. We are focused on producing the finest gaming products on the market today as we continue to build and expand the richness of our games and settings. We are a growing game company in search of great people who are enthusiastic about producing engaging and enjoyable experiences and who can appreciate the inherent beauty of giant steam-powered robots smashing each other to pieces.

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to join our Bellevue-based crew and help lead a team of graphic designers in setting the look for future award-winning products.

Duties include:

Management of a small, elite design team
The art director will coordinate tasks and schedules of the graphic design to ensure products are finished on time. The art director will match jobs and divide work according to each designer's capabilities while defining and maintaining processes and workflow. The art director will be responsible for giving reviews and evaluating the members of the design team as well as resolving computer and software issues related to design work.

Oversight of the look of printed materials for HORDES, WARMACHINE, marketing materials, and upcoming products
The art director will work with the designers and the creative director to ensure a consistent look and quality of all Privateer Press products as well as coordinating with marketing, organized play and R&D departments to ensure their vision and needs are met in the designed product. The art director will be instrumental in innovating new styles, shapes, and materials for products and will be required for hands-on design and layout of books, ads, posters, brochures, cards, postcards, etc. as needed.

Commission of art for books and products
The art director will work with the creative director to obtain art internally and from contractors that reflects each game's style and visual goals. The art director will be responsible for meeting delivery deadlines for art, sourcing new talent, and maintaining relationships and negotiating contract fees with artists.

Quoting and production management for products
The art director will locate new vendors and maintaining relationships with vendor representatives. The art director will select vendors based on their capabilities, pricing, and quality, obtain and compare quotes, manage projects within budget constraints, and work with the production manager to make sure jobs are sent to vendors on schedule. The art director will work with the printers to resolve pricing and product quality issues and may be called upon to travel for quality control checks during the manufacturing of products.

Job Skills and Proficiencies

Required:

Must be able to design print projects from scratch using Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc. Must be able to make files that are print-ready.

Must be adept at the use of the Macintosh platform and current operating system.

Must understand pre-press and the basics of commercial printing and be comfortable talking about it with vendors.

Must understand art and have a good sense for quality in both technical and artistic aspects.

Must have at least three years graphic design experience.

Must have the ability to thrive under pressure, laugh in the face of adversity, and find victory in a job well done.

Preferred:

Have a game background, or at least a background in some similar type of design (e.g. skateboarding, video games, board games, etc.) Experience with Privateer Press products is highly desirable.

Have a basic understanding of photography in general and the process of digital photography.

Have experience as a team leader. Be able to suggest ideas and take an active role in the creative process.

Have experience with book or rulebook layout.

Have experience with packaging layout and design.

Have experience managing employees or small project groups.

Have a great sense of humor, the ability to quote movies (good and bad), and a desire to participate in the development of a fast paced, growing company.
