You know I am sure someone got their start in RPG's because of a store, somewhere. However everyone I have been exposed to got into gaming because a classmate, coworker, or friend got them into gaming. Plus I haven't gamed in a game store (other than game days) for close to a decade. My kids have never gamed in a game store except for a brief 5 week stint in Monterey at the LGS there, and game days. Most of our gaming today is online via SKYPE and Maptools, and I have come to actually prefer it over face to face. So no, we do not NEED LGS' in order to have RPG gaming survive. They are nice to have, but far from essential. The reality is the book industry is changing much like the music industry has, and requires book stores, especially RPG stores, to change their business plan, radically, to survive. The reality is Amazon in combination with ENWorld/RPG messageboards, and SKYPE?Maptools, and the like, are becoming our new "gaming store". Cheaper, far more convenient, and world wide. I game with people from South Korea to Europe. I get to talk with them, find out what its like to live and work where they are. Far better than anyone I ever met in a local gaming store. Its really cool gaming with people where it is Friday night for you, but their Saturday afternoon is beginning.
