His parents met while his mom, the pilot, was ferrying a group of scientists to a conference. She fell in love with dad, the scientist. They settled down and raised a family. Derek’s brother, the oldest child, was good with his hands and became a ship’s engineer. His sister, the middle child, at first started in science like her dad, but eventually migrated to medicine and became a doctor. Derek, however, had a difficult time finding his niche in life. At first he tried to convince his parents that he should go into public relations, but they really felt that his true calling was the stars. So Derek set off to try some of the things that had worked for his parents and siblings.</p><p></p><p>First he tried to follow in his father’s footsteps and try his hand at scientist. Things worked out for a few months but he never quite got the hang of it. There was also the matter of a “small” explosion that took out half a city block.</p><p></p><p>Next he chose to try medicine and follow in his older sister’s footsteps. He received training in field medicine and hired himself onto a crew as the medic. Things worked out fine mainly because no one got injured or sick for several months. But eventually something big happened. The captain came down with some sort of bug and Derek was completely lost in how to treat him. Although the captain survived, his career as a medic did not.</p><p></p><p>He next chose to follow in his older brother’s footsteps and try his hand at engineering. However, after his problems with medicine in space he decided to go about it on a planet. He apprenticed himself to a local engineer that kept the city’s sewage systems running. Things went well for a time, but as his luck had not been running so well on his previous attempts at careers this one hit a snag as well. He was sent to repair the sewage system of a local official. Although he was able to repair the system, the official was nearly drowned in raw sewage in the process and he quickly lost his job.</p><p></p><p>His prospects quickly dwindling he chose the only other career left and decided to follow in his mother’s footsteps. Piloting actually worked out to be the best career choice of the four. He did well at it and thought he had found the right job. However things drastically changed on that fateful day when the ship he was piloting was attacked by Reavers. An instrument panel shorted out and knocked the captain out. All seemed lost until Derek, somehow, instinctively began barking out orders. Because of his quick action the ship and all her crew were saved that day. It was then that he remembered the stories of his great grandfather from his childhood. Seems the old man was quite the captain. From that day forward Derek knew his true calling.</p><p></p><p>His true challenge was holding on to his property. His bad round of luck continued and although he was a good captain he continues to be an atrocious money manager.</p></blockquote><p></p>
