[QUOTE="Blue, post: 6449413, member: 20564"] Next in a series of yoinkable setting flavor from my 13th Age campaign. Quick note about the name: Between Uniques and such, my Dragon Empire has a more Victorian feel, with late Roman Republic style of politics and university going on. With dwarves having clockwork liek the forgeborn we've got mini-steampunk going on, with pocket chonometers and such that the Archmage is aggressively ignoring. * The Arcalyceum is a magical university solely sponsored by the Archmage. You must be a citizen of the Empire and either show native magical talent or come from an enfranchised family known for it's magical talent. * It floats and slowly spins around the spire of Stardock, but is separate. You can't get into Stardock from the Arcalyceum. * It is a series of marble buildings (because it's heavier) connected by clear crystal covered bridges. * It is kept aloft by lightning reservoirs that have been charged not just naturally but also by decades of students. * Since the AM never does anything for just one reason, it also acts as a giant magical capacitor so that the differences in magical charge between the world and the Overworld don't ground out through Starport. If there are problems with it's lightning reservoirs the whole area around it both below and above can turn into a giant wild magic zone for some time. * To keep the students constantly working with magic, ANYTHING that can be done with magic is, even if it's more efficient to do things in other ways. Laundry, cooking, etc. * There are physical workers for some things that shouldn't be affected with magic. For example, low powered artifacts being studied are dusted using special insulating feather dusters instead of magic. * There is a system to protect against runaway magic effects created by the AM. It's sufficient to damp down basically whatever the power level for at least a short time, but the more it needs to damp down, the less precise it can be. And it doesn't start very precise. * They understand students and many things that are "forbidden" they understand students will do/experiment with/break into/etc. More than one infraction has turned into an advanced research opportunity.
