My wizard Paelias was my first ever 5th edition character. He was a high elf divination wizard with the acolyte background revering Oghma. We started out with Lost Mines of Phandelvar and then transitioned into Out of the Abyss after level 5. We started with the pre built characters from the starter set but then we were allowed to level them as we saw fit and as such was very much a stereotypical wizard character. He loved adventuring for the new things to be discovered and learning new knowledge. I focused primarily on control spells for combat taking the occasional efficient blast spell to spam while I had concentration on something else. I also had a suite of utility magic for exploration like Detect Magic, Comprehend Languages, Tongues (which was needed to actually converse with some of the underdark denizens, sometimes you just gotta fill gaps like that), Fly, Arcane Eye, Scrying, etc. By the time we finished playing I was decked out with magic items. Staff of Defense, Wand of Magic Missiles, a crystal that gave +1 to spell attacks and spell DC, and a talisman to control a Shield Guardian. Mechanically Paelias is probably the most fun I've had playing a character. My half elf cleric Roland was played in a nautical campaign where we crewed a vessel throughout an archipelago to adventure and make a profit. Roland was a lawful evil knowledge cleric of Vecna. To make this evil character work he was very loyal and I ensured the other players that there was 0 possibility of any backstabbing and he would always follow the captain's orders (the captain was another PC). As I described above Roland was intended to be a skill monkey specialized in his role as the ship's navigator (primarily used Nature checks which I gave myself expertise in) and using support magic where needed. But with Toll the Dead and Spiritual Weapon meant that with some lucky rolls he could also dish out the pain which I was pleasantly surprised with. He was however extremely fragile meaning that combat was still a bit of a struggle for him. Pushing up my mental stats meant that I had few points for physical and ended up with a +0 con modifier. If something got up in my face I had to rely on an ally to save me and his concentration checks were 100% dependent on how much the dice liked me. Overall he was a very fun character to role play. Very effective for his designed purpose and meh everywhere else.
