4 out of 5 rating for Starfinder Core Rulebook I'm really going to use this more for other magic-less settings than the now golarion-less PF-universe, so the fact that magics caps out at lvl 6 is largely irrelevant, but when I use it for he intended setting, I will put magic back on track with the rest of the PF-verse. Same with the sudden "only 2 magic items" rule, because somehow the magical fields (no matter what type they are) suddenly interfere with each other. They didn't for ages, so they shouldn't now. Really, for me there aren't many things worse than messing up the inner workings of a world. If you take SF as a standalone totally independent from its PF background, then this of course won't matter. I love the themes. Themes are core aspects to your PC's background and will give little boosts, much like traits do in PF. There are unfortunately no traits in SF, which you can easily add back in if you feel like it of course. I dislike the "every 5 levels increase 4 ability scores. It is done to balance the PCs out more, as you need to assign them to different abilities, and unless you have 16 or less you can only add one point each. But 4 is just too much in my opinion. But time will tell. There are stamina and resolve points now, and now HP loss officially represents wounds, what many groups do anyway, so this makes me happy. As damage is soaked up by stamina points first, this doesn't mean your PC will keel over from wounds too soon. When your HPs are gone, resolve points come into play. Instead of going into negative HP, you subtract the resolve but you may also spend resolve to regain consciousness. Equipment has levels. This I can't get my head around yet. This is adding to the WPL issues every game eventually has, but I'll see how it turns out before I form an opinion. Elimination of the 5ft step and other changes in the action economy also have me unconvinced. I won't get the 5ft step out of my players and myself anyway. All in all, battles have become rather boring, I can't even describe it, you'd need to try for yourself. It will take major house ruling to make it fully compatible with PF. But even if you don't need compatibility, you will need, at least for now, d20 future books to supplement the lacking vehicles, equipment and starships for now, and substitute the starship rules with something which will actually work. From what we tried out, in higher levels it's all screwed up. Paizo is already working on this I heard, but as of now I wouldn't use it. Still 4 stars for the artwork, the original content and a little for the promise of more to come.
