The steps were slick with moss and the air smelt of potatoes, so this was obviously the right way to go.</span></p><p><span style="color: blue"></span></p><p><span style="color: blue">The steps led up to a perfectly circular, perfectly horizontal tunnel about ten feet across, lined with some kind of glassy metallic substance that was warm to the touch but easy to walk along. A faint breeze blew steadily down the tunnel. In the far distance, a bell rang, just once. As they moved cautiously forward, a red light flickered on and off several times ahead. Johnny felt tense, and I don't mean the future perfect kind of tense; more the imperfect present with a side order of subjunctive.
