I haven't ever seen the BBC version, but I started watching the American version with a friend earlier tonight, and we both stopped watching because it just was not funny to either of us. My friend finds a lot of things funny that I don't, and vice versa, and both of us were in agreement that this show was just painful to watch. And dull. I love Scrubs and the Simpsons. I watched a couple of episodes of Arrested Development and didn't really like it. Seinfeld is great. Most sitcoms nowadays are too formulaic and use the same trite, cliched jokes and pacing. The Office, admittedly, doesn't seem to fall into the same formula of the sitcoms (which is a plus), but based on this pilot episode, I won't be watching any more of it. It was dull and unfunny. I liked Steve Carel on the Daily Show a lot, but here he was just mugging for the camera too much and overplaying things. The other characters just were boring- though that probably had as much to do with the faux-documentary style they used in this episode as with their performances and the material. I don't know if the show gets funnier when (if?) they stop using the documentary style or not, but like I said, I won't be watching to see.
