Some old-school folks are quite content in winging all of this and using ability checks, and there's no reason they should have to invest in anything more elaborate than the basic "roll vs. DC Y to see if you do X" that's already present in the rules (the rough mechanical equivalent of giving everyone a basic melee attack and giving the DM some advice for AC's and calling it a day).
