3 out of 5 rating for Tome of Horrors 5E I backed the Kickstarter for this book and even though the hardcover is not released yet the PDF is on sale on their website. I was very excited to look through the pdf because the cover art is awesome and I was eager to see what new monsters they had made. There are almost 300 monsters (I counted 291). The Bad: There are just a lot of entries for the same types of monster. Some examples: 10 different beetles, 6 kinds of bulettes, 7 oozes, 6 different sea serpents, 8 zombies, etc…There’s even 3 different rhinos and 2 kinds of beavers (and those are each full page entries for the beavers)! And that’s just some of the monsters that have multiple entries-there are more. I would have liked to see more variety. Now, if you like demons and demon lords you’re in luck. There are 13 demons and 7 demon lords. The entries are in the format that 5E monsters come in now but the formatting is not quite right. For some monsters the traits and actions are very close together and the font is all bolded and a little hard to read. The monster description and stat blocks are clear but the traits and actions are a smaller font, not spaced apart, and the same darkness so they kind of blend all together. Some entries are like this, some don’t seem to have bolding, and some are fine. The Middle: The artwork is really hit or miss but personally I would rather have really good black and white art then full color but not as high quality. Some of the art really does not look good (I’m looking at you Ice Gnome and Death Cow-yes the Cow is a monster). The Good: I’m sure I’ll find a use for the monsters. There are some different kinds in here but overall my enthusiasm for the product was not met by the contents I found inside. Note for people who own Fifth Edition Foes already: One thing I was concerned about was that I already had Fifth Edition Foes from Frog God Games and I was hoping there wouldn’t be too much duplication with the monsters. Of the 291 monsters, 45 were in 5[SUP]th[/SUP] Fifth Edition Foes. If you don’t have that book of monsters though you’ll have even more new ones to choose from.
