Accounting degree here (first degree is in History), the layoffs are a numbers game, no scratch that its more complicated than that. The bean counters (which I am one that group) have to deal with the quantifiable, which means that the institutional knowledge stuck in someone’s head is very difficult to value vs. the straight up spreadsheet crunching you can do with that same person’s compensation package. You will notice that there are a lot of senior people exiting WotC, there is a reason for that. Generally speaking, they are usually pegged out in their pay scale for their role at the company and if there is no where for them to move up the ladder (assuming they want to do that) those are the people C suite is going eyeball for early retirement. My bet that lots of long term folks chose the early retirement offer. This helps the company in several ways… 1) You can retain more lower paid staff. 2) There is now holes in the org. chart that can be filled with those folks when times are good again. 3) Generally speaking the folks who take early retirement get a better severance deal. I will bet my bottom dollar that Mike and Chris took those deals as well as some of the other high level folks. That is my bean counter hat, now I will put on a more wholistic hat. I cannot begin to tell you the amount lost productivity, creativity, and morale something like this will cause. Some companies can mitigate this by emphasizing process over person. I call this the MAC truck theory… If I get hit by a truck tomorrow, are the processes I handle documented and are not dependent on me being alive and breathing? If the answer is no, then the company has a big problem. This is all well and fun with something like accounting but creative work is a little more ephemeral. And this is why the brain drain at WotC will have an outsized impact on future production. That is my two cents. Take what value you will from it.
