Gate is incredibly versatile. 1. Its most potent use is forcing the bad guys to fight on your turf. You can spend hours or days preparing an ambush, and then summon the villain from wherever it is, away from its minions and right into the middle of your death traps without so much as a saving throw. The biggest bad guys (gods and planar rulers) are immune to this trick, but any lesser enemy can be targeted. 2. As @Frankie1969 points out, you can use it to "bomb" the bad guys by dragging their natural enemies into the fray. If you're facing down Demogorgon, and you gate in a solar, the solar's first order of business will be to deal with the demon prince in its face. Even if you have to defend yourself against an angry solar after Demogorgon is defeated, you're still much better off than you were. 3. It combos beautifully with planar binding and magic circle. Take a goristro, for instance. It can't teleport, so it can't escape the circle; its Int is 6, so you don't have to worry about it outsmarting you; and it's a demon, so getting it killed fighting your enemies is not just morally acceptable but a positive good. Three hundred hit points of demonic beef is some sweet cannon fodder. 4. You don't have to target a creature at all. Gate can be used as a mode of planar transportation. It's like plane shift, but it creates a portal that stays open for a full minute, allowing you to move several hundred people, large objects, etc.
