Why do PCs Need Leadership when Monster's Don't?

IMO Leadership is giving up a feat so that you have loyal followers that the DM doesn't futz with, as compared to the NPCs who may be followers or may be awaiting an opportunity to kill you in your sleep. Unless the PC does something to screw over the followers, they stay loyal.

Right now IMC the fighter and the halfling both have "followers" they've acquired due to their expenditure of "gold" on "rediculous" quantities of ale. These people say all the right things but the fighter and halfing know that only a handful of the rabble would actually hang around them if they turned up broke.

On the flip side, the cleric or the bard both have followers they've acquired from the expenditure of a feat slot for Leadership. Those people say similar things to the rabble but will actually offer up money or at least crash space and food if the cleric or bard showed up broke.
