He sports a small neat goatee and more often than not can be seen smiling wistfully at things that only he knows. He wears tan coloured leather breeks and knee-length boots, a thick ruby-red fine shirt (That covers up his mithril chain shirt.) and a light lace-cuffed white cotton shirt underneath. Upon a wide brown belt around his waist is scabbarded his trusty sword, his spell component pouch, and a belt pouch containing around 5gp (The rest of his money is kept in one of the side pockets of his backpack). Around his neck hanging from a royal blue ribbon is a silver flute, the instrument of his trade. If out adventuring, Jenlan wears his Haversack on his back and bow slung over his shoulder. Those who look closely enough would notice that the front teeth in this handsome gnome's smile are all made of gold - a legacy of his encounter with Bilix’ mother’s slayer.

Cohort

Bilix

Exp: 15'000

Male Copper Dragon Wyrmling (8ECL = 6HD + 2 Lvl Adjustment)

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Patron Deity: Garl Glittergold

Length: 4’

Height: 1’

Wing Span: 7’

Weight: 5lbs

Skin Colour: Puddle-Brown

Eyes: Dark Blue

Age: 2

Str: 11 (0)

Dex: 12 (+1)

Con: 13 (+1)

Int: 12 (+1)

Wis: 13 (+1)

Cha: 12 (+1)

Hit Dice: 6d12+6

HP: 54, Current 54

AC: 20 (10 +0 Dex, +5 Natural Armor, +2 Bracers, +1 Gloves, +2 Size)

Init: +0 (+0 Dex)

Speed: 40', fly 100’(average)

Saves:

Fortitude +7

Reflex +7

Will +7

Class and Racial Abilities:

Copper Dragon Breath Weapon every 1d4 rounds: Line of Acid 30’ 2d4 dam (DC14) or 15’ Cone of Slow 1d6-1 Rnds Fort DC14 negates , Blindsense 60’, Darkvision 120’, Immunity to Acid Magic Sleep effects and Paralysis, Low-Light Vision, Spider Climb

BAB: +6

Melee - His small overlapping scales, face and horn-plates are a ruddy dirty brown, far from the matured copper colour his species is known for. His dark azure eyes hold a wild youthful spark and a thirst for knowledge. Upon his forelimbs, he wears shining silver magical bracers, black magical gloves on his forepaws and a magical Cloak of the same red that Janlen wears – items all garnered from his adventures outside of the Gnome lands. Like his friend and constant companion, Jenlan, Bilix is frequently in chirpy spirits. He doesn’t have the typical aloof attitude that dragons (Even young dragons) are known for when dealing with mortal races – a result of his upbringing by a mortal and not, a dragon. Bilix loves to fly, choosing to only land to play practical jokes on his friends and strangers a like from various improbable perches (Thanks to his Spiderclimb ability.), and to eat/sleep. He also likes to read old tomes and take trips out amongst the countryside on his own for days at a time to explore and see new sights.

Background:

Amongst the Trielta Hills can be found communities of Gnomes, quietly going about their lives, tending sheep, working their small mines and otherwise keeping to themselves. Their closest neighbours are Halfling homesteads, oft deserted human mining outposts and for a time a friendly Female Copper Dragon, named Billixtriax.

A shepherd, Jenlan was thought of as a dreamer amongst the folk of his Gnomish village. Many were the times as he lay humming to himself, or lain upon a hilltop practicing with his flute, that his flock of sheep would disperse, causing the young Gnome to spend many hours searching for the lost sheep. These events though, would not bring down his spirits, as he would happily walk about playing his flute as he searched, knowing that the flock would be drawn to his tunes, quite familiar with their herder’s soothing melodies.

One particular over-cast day, during his very young twenty-seventh year, Jenlan was again, searching for his dispersed flock, which had wandered off as he lay dreaming of wizards and princesses in far off lands. All but two of the sheep were accounted for and without realizing, the young Gnome had wandered far from the grazing pastures. He heard bleating come from a large cave and a little fearful, went inside to search for his sheep. Five steps inside, and he saw his lambs, cowering in a corner behind a small boulder. Thankful they hadn’t been deep inside the cave, he tucked each under an arm and turned to leave, only to see a huge shadow obstruct the exit. With a high pitched yell and many bleats the gnome and sheep fell back in a tumble, Jenlan knocked unconscious as his head hit the rocky floor and the four-legged wooly mammals scampering into the darker recesses.

Jenlan awoke to unnatural lighting, in a cave that smelt curiously like freshly cut grass, and that sparkled from a huge pile of gems and gold and silver coins. Eyes wide with wonder he lurched to sit up in order to get a better view of his surroundings… And promptly fell back again, hand at his brow in pain as a splitting headache attacked his senses. “You are a silly brave Gnome. What is your name?” The voice startled him from thoughts of headache cures and he turned to see where the flowing female voice had come from. His eyes fell upon a head resting upon folded front paws of a massive copper dragon. “I uh, my-my name is Jenlan. Your majesty! I mean your eminence! Your honour! O… Just what do you say when you are about to be eaten whole?” To his surprise, the dragon laughed a full and genuine laugh. The sounds flowed over him and he felt the warmth they contained and realized he was in no danger whatsoever. “And, you?” He swept his gaze about his surroundings and the huge pile of treasure that the She-Dragon used as a bed (It seemed). “I assume that as I am not lining your gullet, that you are Billixtriax, fabled lady of these hills? She who has been a fine, if a little pesky” He motioned with a smirk to the lambs who stood next to the treasure heap munching on the grass from which the scent came. “neighbour to us Gnomes?” The dragon again chuckled.

“Sir Janlen, you mock me? A dragon in the very throws of majesty?”

Janlen blanched, as he realized he had taken his fun-making too far and was becoming that much closer to becoming a meal after all. “No-no! I meant no offense! Only that.. I … Um.” He bent his knee to the dragon and lowered his head. “Only that this is my first opportunity to be able to talk with a being as honoured as you. I really do not know how to address you much less keep you from swallowing me!”

Again the dragon chuckled. “I think Sir Janlen, that you mock me. But it amuses me nonetheless. If truth be told young Gnome, I have been watching you for some time now. As you tend your flock, (Quite poorly I may add.)I have been watching from the earth and listening to the wonderful melodies you concoct with that flute of yours. Now I have you before me, I have an offer – would you learn more? Would you receive the tutelage of a Dragon in your true profession?” The emphasis on “true” could not be mistaken and Janlen knew for the first time in his life, that here was his true calling being pointed out to him. “Why yes Billixtriax, yes I would.”

From that day on, the gnome and dragon spent most days together. Janlen passed on his shepherding duties to a cousin and he in turn was left alone with his new teacher, who it turned out, was as much a lover of music and sarcasm as he was. Over the years, Janlen learnt the majicks that worked with music and song. He learnt to wow audiences and even managed to be heard in the halls at Triel and later the main Inns of Baldurs Gate. During one of his journeys to the coast, there came news of a terrible Red Dragon who had been razing farms to the ground and holding whole communities to ransom in the Trielta Hills area. So the Gnome rushed back to his homelands, in the hopes that his family and friends were still safe and that he could help in the efforts to keep them that way. His journey was swift and his destination was as safe as it had always been. But tales amongst the villagers told of a fearsome battle between the Red Dragon and Billixtriax in the skies. Fearing for his friend and mentor’s life, the Gnome took up his bow and flute and rushed to her haven.

When he arrived, he saw that the damage had already been done. Billixtriax’ cave, blackened by unnatural fires and smashed by horrible fury was barely left open. With a brave swallow, Jenlan ventured in. The outward appearance offered only an indication of the damage that had been wrecked inside. The culmination of this all was his mentor’s poor broken and inert body left in a pool of her own life’s blood, dead eyes still fierce in their determination to fight back the evil dragon who had also come to rest not far from her, body half dissolved with acid and sunken into the cave-wall. In her last throws, Billixtriax had laid low her oppressor but at a terrible cost. Janlen sat in that cave for hours weeping and playing the saddest songs that he had learnt, to honour his friend’s brave passing.

As four hours turned into five, Janlen was brought out of his sorrowful thoughts by a rustling. Startled, he realized it came from the evil dragon’s body and with a flick, the thing’s tail twitched again, this time in a far more violent fashion. Scared, the little bard did his best to duck behind a rocky column, only to peek out and see that the red dragon somehow still lived. Though, it’s body was severely damaged by acids and bite and claw wounds, and half of the creature was sunken into the rock wall itself (No doubt due to some spell thrown at it by Billixtriax.), the fierce creature tried to rise up. Cracks appeared in the cave wall and soon chunks of rock were falling and dust billowing out as a broken wing broke free. The dragon’s three legs – the fourth a dissolved stump – each worked furiously as they managed to drag the rest of the horrid monster free of the prison and soon the dragon was making it’s way with a terrible roar of pain, out to the blackened cave entrance. At first, Jenlan thought he had gotten away with his life, safe now that the dragon had gone, but he soon realized his error as the cave about him continued to crumble and the gnome had to dodge pieces of rock that would otherwise crush him. His back to a wall and being forced deeper and deeper into the cave, Jenlan was wholly surprised as he felt himself fall backwards through what he then saw to be a hidden passage. Sadly, as he fell, he also noticed the fist-sized rock that bore down upon his face and smashed into his astonished mouth. None of the handsome gnome’s front teeth survived the experience.

Once again, Jenlan awoke in unfamiliar surroundings. His mouth a bloody mess, teeth bent at unnatural angles or totally smashed through. The gnome screamed in pain, until he could gather enough control to force a healing spell from his fumbling lips. This dulled the pain almost completely, but could not restore his smile. After spitting out more blood and another tooth and wiping his face with his shirt sleeve, Jenlan looked about himself and the area he had fallen into. This was a place in Billixtriax’s home that he had never been shown. He felt the freshness of the winds gently flow through and saw further up the passage that there must be an opening to the daylight. As his eyes grew accustomed to the lessening gloom, he also noticed that his mentor had used this area to store more of her treasure horde (What must have been 5’000 gold pieces worth) – and something else… Sunken into a clay mound lay a single egg. Astonished and pain forgotten, Jenlan carefully made his way to the precious thing. His small overlapping scales, face and horn-plates are a ruddy dirty brown, far from the matured copper colour his species is known for. Background: Amongst the Trielta Hills can be found communities of Gnomes, quietly going about their lives, tending sheep, working their small mines and otherwise keeping to themselves. A dragon in the very throws of majesty?” Janlen blanched, as he realized he had taken his fun-making too far and was becoming that much closer to becoming a meal after all. “No-no! I meant no offense! Only that.. I … Um.” He bent his knee to the dragon and lowered his head. “Only that this is my first opportunity to be able to talk with a being as honoured as you. I really do not know how to address you much less keep you from swallowing me!” Again the dragon chuckled. “Why yes Billixtriax, yes I would.” From that day on, the gnome and dragon spent most days together. Now he understood why his teacher had fought to the last – she was protecting her child. Knowing that he could honour her memory in no better way, Jenlan made up his mind to help bring his friend’s offspring into the world and to teach the wyrmling everything she had taught him before. Secretly over the months, the bard made enquiries into acquiring books, expensive books that were hard to find. They told of methods and legends and myths regarding wyrmling rearing and so forth. Though he was scared his lack of true knowledge would ultimately fail in this, Jenlan found that his ward seemed safe and well and often heard the little creature stirring in it’s shell.
