See one of the disconnects for me in this discussion is that it wouldn't even cross my mind to make a character that I actually plan on playing until I've heard the campaign pitch. Only after a DM has given me the ground rules do I go about coming up with a concept. There are just WAY too many variables otherwise. Are there that many people out there who sit around and develop their one and only character in a vacuum, and then seek out a campaign to play it in? This is just a very foreign concept to me. Don't get me wrong, I play around with character concepts using all of the published sources available for fun, but there's no point in picking one absent a campaign to play it in. As a side point, I also don't get being deeply attached to a particular race or class. For example, my regular game group pretty much HATES gnomes. When one of them DM's, they frequently will outright ban gnomes. Any time gnomes come up, there is a string of ridicule. I personally find the more recent flavor on gnomes to be appealing, and think that they make for fascinating characters. However, I will probably NEVER play a gnome character. Even if it was allowed in a campaign, the general prejudice of the group would make the process unenjoyable. And you know what? I'm OK with that. I enjoy the group that I play with (despite their irrational anti-gnomicism), and have plenty of ideas that I think are fun. I have a hard time imagining a scenario where I would NEED to play a gnome to enjoy myself.
