[QUOTE="Karma Kollapse, post: 7162061, member: 6693505"] GM's note: This was the first session at The Yellow Book in Brighton, which has now become our regular home after switching about for a while. Gideon's player was missing from this session - thankfully I had his character sheet and the players found using him as a human shield very easy. --- Adventure 1 - The Island at the Axis of the World "Pressure Cooker" Regan picked himself up and limped across the deck towards the Boiler where the rest of the party were gathered. Accompanied by the tang of burning leather, his face distorted by 1st degree burns and a large angry bruise he asked, 'Anyone got any healing?' Toble clicked his fingers, thought for a moment and cast a Cure Wounds spell. Some of the pain ebbing away, Regan said 'I'm going up to the top deck'. He flicked the large Red Gem recovered from the Elf Maid towards Gideon. 'See if you can work out what that is', he said. As he turned away from the dangerously hot Boiler, Vash stepped toward him. 'I'll come with you', he said, 'I've got an idea'. The two of them scampered up the ladder to the upper decks. Toble glanced at the Boiler, then at Maisie and Gideon. 'We need to get this thing under control', he said. Maisie nodded, continuing to scoop handfuls of red-hot fire gems from the inferno raging in front of them. Tobal noticed a couple of levers to either side of the Boiler and suggested they pull them. Gideon duly obliged, causing a pretty much insignificant drop in pressure. Regan called from the Gun Deck, 'How's it looking?'. 'Not Good', replied Toble, who was now trying to scrape the fire-gems Maisie had removed away from the furnace, his quarter-staff smoldering slightly as he did so. On the Gun Deck, Regan went to retrieve the halfling they had left handcuffed there earlier, still guarded by the Axe-Beak (now formally known as Knuck). 'I'm going to speak to the Designer of the Cannon'', said Vash over his shoulder as he headed upstairs to the main deck. On arrival, Vash saw the unmistakable figure of the Tiefling Weapon Designer at the far-end of the deck and pushed his way urgently through the crowd of revellers, causing some disquiet as he went. Regan arrived on the deck, dragging the halfling with him, triggering a further wave of alarm. He found Inspector Delft and informed him of the situation below, suggesting that the King be evacuated from the ship. Panic levels were now rising on the main deck, with orders being barked to ready life-boats accompanying general shouting and hysteria. Minister Harkover Lee took the King to one side and cast a spell. Both of them were immersed briefly in a faint, blue glow before the Wizard winked out of existence. The King, open-mouthed and staring at the space previously occupied by the Wizard, wondered why he was still standing on the ships deck and not safely back in the Palace. In the Palace the Wizard was looking about with similar consternation, wondering where the King was. Piotr was rudely awakened from his slumber on the main deck when someone heading for the life-boats planted their foot firmly in his midriff. Gazing around with bleary eyes, he decided to head downstairs and seek out his companions. Why he didn't head for the lifeboats no-one knows. We can only assume he was driven by some Dwarven imperative, when in doubt, to head downwards into darkness. Vash found the Tiefling Weapon Designer and explained the situation below. Regan joined the pair of them. 'What if we charged up and fired the Cannon. Would that not relieve all the pressure in the Boiler?', he asked. 'Should work', the Tiefling replied. 'Trouble is, the weapon isn't calibrated properly to be fired at the moment. We'd need Mages to make the calculations to get the capacitors charged from the Boiler'. Vash turned to Regan, urging him to find the Captain and tell him to fire the Cannon when he sees it is fully charged. 'Come with me', continued Vash, grabbing the sleeve of the Tiefling and heading back to the stairs down to the lower decks. Vash and the Tiefling descended as quickly as they could, picking up Piotr on the way. They arrived on the Boiler Deck to find Maisie still scrapping fire-gems from the Boiler and Toble still spreading them around with his staff (which was by now reduced by the heat to the size of a Gnomish rolling-pin). On instruction from the Tiefling, the party cast a variety of spells to try and discern the correct method of charging up the huge capacitors that powered the cannon. They found the solution just as the Boiler pressure became critical. Up on the main deck, detecting a huge surge of energy into the cannon, the Captain (duly briefed by Regan) stabbed the fire button. A gout of intense orange flame erupted from the Cannon, a bolt of energy lanced out and sped across the bay. It crashed into the cliffs of a nearby island with such force that the resulting pyrotechnic display caused everyone in the vicinity to gawp at the sky in wonder. The Boiler pressure dropped to almost nothing and there was much rejoicing. Returning to the main deck, someone thought it would be a good idea to interrogate the Halfling. This suggestion was greeted with a disturbing glint in the eyes of Piotr, who cracked his knuckles, rummaged in his pack and produced a set of Dwarven cutlery that seemed a bit too elaborate for use simply on a Sunday roast. Fortunately, Maisie intervened and cast a Charm Person spell on the now ashen faced Halfling. He immediately became her firm friend and after divulging his life story went on to explain recent events. The plot it seemed was hatched by the Duchess with the intention of killing the King and taking Royal power for herself. The halfling, a hired Assassin, had also poisoned the King and disrupted his ability to teleport. The Elven Maid, who it turned out was an Eladrin, was questioned back at RHCHQ. An alliance was revealed between the Duchess and the Fey, the objective of which was nothing less than the rolling back of the pollution-spewing industrialization of Risur and a return to the old ways, where a healthy balance of nature (and Magic) could be restored. Over the following weeks a full blown Civil War threatened to tear Risur apart. The Tielflings of Danor were more than a little concerned by this and proposed an alliance with Risur, with the intention of crushing the Duchess' forces and ending the Fey menace. The Tiefling Princess Lya herself came to the RHC headquarters and recruited the party to aid in a mission to capture Axis Island, which the Duchess' forces now garrisoned. In the process, if possible, they were to rescue the Tieflings' cousin Nathan who it was believed was being held hostage on the Island. Supplied with specialist equipment for the task (and tooled up with their own gear) the party were instructed to act as back-up for a crack infiltration team heading for the Island. This team was to open the fortress gates, an action which would herald an attack by a combined Risur/Danor fleet. Job to be completed in three days otherwise Risur/Danor relations descend into the sewage system. No pressure then. They boarded the RHC Clipper Impossible and set sail for Axis Island, a place noted as being more than a little unstable in the space-time continuum department. During the voyage the party were alarmed by another vision inflicted on Toble. His description of the Planet Athelona spinning through space, accompanied by the hideous croaking of a plague of frogs and a fierce disembodied Lions head did not bode particularly well. On arrival, the infiltration team set off underwater with the intention of entering the lower levels of an old Mine, before proceeding to the surface and setting off overland to the fortress itself. A rope was trailed from the team back to the ship, frantic tugging on which was the signal for the party to enter the gloomy, silted water themselves and proceed through to the Mine.
