Creature Advancement Question

As a monster advances in HD it may or may not gain feats, skill points, etc. as stated in the creature overview. What I was wondering was whether or not creature stats improve as they gain hit die (not during a size change, but if a creature goes from 4 HD to 8HD and doesn't change size). Do they?

The rules as such don't really say that a creature's ability scores increase/decrease as they advance in HD (excepting size of course)....but remember, the ability scores given in the MM are for AVERAGE creatures. So, it stands to reason that a larger or stronger Pit Fiend or Annis (or whatever) would have higher/lower ability scores.

So- basically, there is no hard and fast rule, but you as DM can change them as you see fit. Just remember to modify attack bonus, damage bonus, saves, skills, and DCs for special attacks if you alter ability scores.
